Thread: Non-Western Songs

    Non-Western Songs

I'd like to hear more songs that are removed from Western music, for instance, George Harrison's Indian influenced songs. Any recs would be appreciated.

Of course... there's Secret Chiefs 3!

I'll let you discover what you might like from the vast catalog on your own. It's a mixture of obvious western aesthetics (ranging from film score to metal) but also quite a lot of non-western tonal systems and instruments and feels that completely defy standard notation.

Perhaps try "Book of Souls: Folio A" or "Book M" to start.

From a cultural & idea historical perspective, Ancient Greece and its influenced followers in, Europe, North Africa and the Middle East are all considered Western.
Eastern (historically) starts at the Eastern Persian (as was) border.

With all due respect, Germany (and Geo Harrison) *are* western artists. If you want the real deal, delve into the African continent -- a lifetime's worth of incredible music unlike anything heard in Europe -- or China, 6000 years of tradition.

There's a whole world out there....I can't begin to list it all.
    But-

Check out Huun Huur Tu, from Tuva. Cool stuff. Throat singing. Freaky.

Also, check out Indonesian and Balinese music, esp. Gamalon.

Thanks for the responses. To be more specific, I'm only concerned with the music, not where the artist is from, and I was thinking more within the prog genre than traditional. Instrumentals are good also.

I don't know which of the following will fit the bill for you but here goes:

Robert Plant performs a unique version of Black Dog with African instruments etc.
    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xrv...don-2009_music
One of his such shows aired on tv under some program name ("Soundstage" maybe) and I think this version of Black Dog in that show built up and rocked out at the end, if I remember correctly. Plus he had some other songs at that show that were similarly uniquely arranged, such as Whole Lotta Love. In summary, find that show.

Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

    One of the greatest voices:

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - his production is enormous, but here is 2 tracks with a slight prog affinity
Mast Mast (With Darryl Jones on bass) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cp00Mp2nug
    Tana Dery Na http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zxLMnZkt-s

Trilok Gurtu has also done tons of crossover music with jazz & progmusicians

Then once again I'll mention Secret Chiefs 3... This time with a link... Here's us doing one of my favorite tunes "Balance of the 19" (in this video at a rock club in Serbia that doubles as a firing range by day ) - note the quarter tones, and non-time-signature.

Balkan / Klezmer is not 'our' usual prog reference, but being very ' - strict' isn't it still western?

If it isnt, I would also recommend bands like Area (Italy) and Barbaro (Hungary).

The band Azigza put out two albums of middle-eastern tinged prog. Both are solid.

Poland's Ankh delve into folky/semi-ethnic territory.

Of course if you haven't done so already definitely check out Peter Gabriel's Passion album as well as Dead Can Dance and it's many followers. Hell, you may even enjoy Loreena McKennitt.
I'm holding out for the Wilson-mixed 5.1 super-duper walletbuster special anniversary extra adjectives edition.

I have to add Dead can dance...some interesting juxtapositions between European mindset and Lisa Gerards middle eastern wails
