I'm familiar with the L Shankar album and I like it, but I'm surprised how mainstream it sounds considering FZ produced it.

Good timing, here's an album I just heard today. It's an Italian folk-rock group who are working with some nomadic Rajasthani musicians. Pretty cool stuff.

I'm holding out for the Wilson-mixed 5.1 super-duper walletbuster special anniversary extra adjectives edition.

I'm surprised that someone hasn't mentioned Rabih Abou Khalil - I have several of his releases and like them all

The comment "that dude's rockin that saz" (saz is the name of the stringed instrument) was made online a while ago by some listener online about his performance of this following song by him.
    https://soundcloud.com/orhanci/orhan...asiz-kul-olmaz
It's essentially a traditional song but yes it does have some such "rockin" segments, so I figured it might be interesting to some.
    Musician's name is Orhan Gencebay.

For a combination of prog and Chinese music:

Dennis Rea - Views from Chicheng Precipice
Zhongyu - “Zhongyu” is Chinese for “Finally”

both on the reliably excellent Moonjune label.

EDIT: Should also mention Charlie Cawood's 2017 chamber-prog opus The Divine Abstract, which has significant elements of Chinese music. And it's a beautiful work.

For a recent entry in the Indo-prog canon that is of the very highest quality, check out Saagara's album 2. This is Waclaw Zimpel's collaboration with a group of musicians from India:

Project by Hamburg based Turkish musicologist Derya Yilderim with Group Simsek. She combines Arabian 1/4 tone music with European pop. In some tutoring videos she explains the difficulties to bring together the two systems. Interesting sound with psychedelic influences.
