How many projects is this man involved with? I've never heard of Bass Communion. Does he sleep?

Bass Communion was partly Wilson's ambient side project, and also partly kind of a testing ground for new ideas. Some bits of Bass Communion subsequently made it into his other projects like No Man.

So...got this in the mail on Tuesday. Only just starting to dig into it, but already pretty happy with the purchase. I'd been wanting to find a copy of Litany for quite some time, and it was worth the wait.

    Good times ahead

Received mine too last Thursday. Only listened to the first two disc's so far. Enjoyed them very much! Need a good sound system to hear the bottom end. Was getting a lot of "skips". Cleaned them and they played fine. I think it is from the packaging.....paper dust, etc.
I have a fare bit of SW and I'm having a hard time getting into his work....but I do enjoy the Bass Communion stuff. Sturdy Box and the artwork is interesting. A bit expensive but I'm glad I made the purchase.

BC is actually one of my favorite SW projects, along with No-Man. Not everything wins me over (I never really got into Pacific Codex or Molotov & Haze), but the earlier ones plus stuff like Litany, Loss and Cenotaph are just terrific mood pieces.

    Ummm... let's see...

    Porcupine Tree
    Blackfield
    No-man
    Bass Communion
    Incredible Expanding Mindfuck

Then there is the one-off Storm Corrosion release with Mikael Akerfeldt, and his solo career which seems to be his chief preoccuation at present, when he is not remixing the entire progresive rock back catalogue.

Of course some of the above projects are either in limbo (eg. PT), or have been more or less offically put to rest (I.E.M.) or in the case of Blackfield it's now basically Aviv Geffen, with just a little production input from Steven. But yes, Steven is a busy man.

How does this compare to IEM?

  12. #12
IEM was more like Krautrock to me...band improv weirdness, especially the albums other than the debut.

Bass Communion is a mix of ambient music (especially the early albums with tracks like Drugged), and later on became an outlet for experimental sound design work, mixed with ambient. I like this stuff most when it leans toward the ambient side of things, although I can appreciate the more experimental bits from an almost "reference guide" standpoint.

This box has a mix of both the ambient stuff and the sound collage/design stuff.

^^ but the two quieter pieces on "Molotov & Haze" are some of the most beautiful things he has done as Bass Communion! The two noise tracks I tend to skip.

Then I really should go back and give this another listen. I think the noise tracks lost me and I never considered the other bits. Thanks!

I currently only own two Bass Communion releases. Continuum SW/Vidna Obmana, which I enjoy quite allot, and Continuum 2, which is very unlistenable to my ears. How does the
music on this Box set compare to these two? I'd really like to shell out the bucks for this, but if it is anywhere near the sounds of Continuum 2, I'm out. Opinions appreciated.

I'm not at all familiar with the bass Communion stuff, but I do know that on the Porcupine Tree forum the album Cenotaph gets highly recommended.

I say it's more Continuum 1 than 2 in that there are no noise tracks on it. But then it's also very different to Continuum 1: Litany is playing around with Choir samples and is very melodic, Pacific Codex is playing around with Metal Sculptures and most people would not consider this to be "music". On Indicates Void, each track is based on one or two sound sources (Voice, Guitar, Piano, Clarinet), I only really like the last track there. The two tracks from the single "Aum shirikyo" (spelling?) are more in the vein of his latest release (Cenotaph). I haven't listened to all reconstructions yet and also not to the Temporal pieces.
    Cheers

Cenotaph - YEAH BABY! Loving this. This is great on headphones but I need to give this sucker a proper spin on the hi-fi when the family is out and lights are off.

I guess I need to investigate more of this stuff, yeah? Fans of Tangerine Dream/ambient krautrock should locate this stuff.
