Just got the release. Worth it for the extended "A Venture" and the live "Perpetual Change" alone.

With CttE, I felt the stereo remixes sounded markedly better because of an improved sonic clarity. I get that a bit here, but it doesn't (on a first listen) seem as pronounced a difference. Lovely liner notes from Sid again too.

Henry, you may have been right about GFTO even though it contradicts the "early 70's" reference at StevenWilsonHQ. There is a new interview (4/30) with Steve Howe in which he speaks of auditioning the next 5.1 project-in-progress with Wilson recently, and it doesn't sound like they were listening to Fragile.
Howe: "And before the Canadian tour started, I sat down with Steve for an afternoon and listened to [the next one Wilson is doing, which hasn’t been officially announced yet; sorry!—The SoundBard]. [...] On [the next one], there’s definitely a sonic improvement. There is a difference. It’s something that’s very, very hard to define — an openness to the higher registers of the music."
Also, later in the interview:
Mettler: "There was a DVD-Audio 5.1 mix of Fragile in 2002. Do you think that’s an album Steven will get to revisit?"
Howe: "Maybe, yeah. That was one I mentioned to Steve. [...] There are some issues with finding all of the masters, but we’ll get there."
The entire conversation is at:
The SoundBard: Heart of the Surround Rise
Doesn't sound like Fragile is next; other candidates for an "early 70's Yes title" could be Tales or Relayer I suppose...
Sounds like Relayer to me. No one complains so much about how Tales sounds, just the content. Eveyone complains about Relayer's lousy sound.
Whichever it is, I'm looking forward to it. I'm really enjoying The Yes Album, as I did Close to the Edge. I trust Wilson to keep doing a good job and I know Panegyric have some interesting bonus material lined up.

Coolio. The interview with Steven Wilson talking about his Close to the Edge remix is also worth a read:
Total 5.1 Mass Retain: Steven Wilson on Mixing Yes’ Close to the Edge in Surround Sound
I'm holding out for the Wilson-mixed 5.1 super-duper walletbuster special anniversary extra adjectives edition.
Kudos to Laser's Edge - ordered this Thursday AM and it arrived in Saturday's mail, outstanding service!
Later on, I will be spinning this in DTS 5.1 Surround for the first time on my "A" system.
Back in college in the late 70's I had proclaimed to anyone who would listen something to the effect that this one was so classic, we'd still be listening to it in our 50's.
It somehow seemed a lot more outrageous a prediction back then!

"When Yes appeared on stage, it was like, the gods appearing from the heavens, deigning to play in front of the people."
So......
The DVD-A has a layer titled "Flat Transfer", while the Blue-Ray has one called "Flat Transfer of Vinyl rip" , anyone have a clue if these are one in the same?
Looks like the BR also adds a couple of tracks from the "In a Word" set, It's Love and America from London 71, in addition to the "Instrumental Mix"
Loving the DTS layer, will hit that hard again tomorrow

I opted for the DVD-A as well, as my "A" system doesn't have a Blue-ray playa
Not thrilled the content is so different - this is the kind of thing that makes folks just say fuck it and d/l things IMO but then again, how many times am I going to spin the Instrumental mix, (once maybe?), or the Vinyl rip, (likely never?).
It's all about the 5.1
For whatever reason, I find the original "side 2" a lot more satisfying sound / atmosphere wise - just fantastic

In retrospect, the "extra" content aside from the 5.1 mix and extended "A Venture" is pretty weak actually - the live cuts from Lindon 71 were already on "The Word Is Live", and New Haven 71 has also been around for years
The DTS layer is worth he price of admission in any case

I've read where the extended A Venture from the Rhino release is extended just a bit here.. true? And reading someones post regarding live stuff has already been out there i.e. New Haven / The Word is Live.. true also? Which brings me to a closing question.. is it really worth dropping $20-$30 bucks for this?
A Venture's ending is significantly different, about 1:30 longer with a really interesting little jam
I've always loved this song, so to me this alone this was significant
"Is it worth it"?
That depends if you have a system and an interest in surround - if you do it's well worth it
If you are any kind of Yes "collector", then you likely have all the extras already, save the "instrumental layer" so again it's all about the 5.1 layer

"A Venture" is not extended on the Rhino release; the extended version here is considerably extended, as BG says (4:46 versus the original 3:18). Most of the live versions are the same as on The Word is Live, but the version of "Perpetual Change" has not been released before.
No, it's also about the Wilson stereo remix, which offers improved clarity compared to the previous standard mix.
Is it worth it? Depends what you want. I think the Rhino releases generally offer good mastering and some great bonus tracks, and they're dead cheap. This is more expensive and there is a law of diminishing returns. But this is now my go-to version of the album. If you want to hear The Yes Album at its best, this is it, IMHO.

Hell.. I'm still with the same system I had in high school mid 70's Sansui amp, Technics turntable.. Dennon CD player and Nachamichi cassette player (OK I bought the last two in the '90's) so.. I wouldn't feel like there would be any advantage to upgrading to the Wilson release.. I'll find A Venture on Youtube and listen to the extended version..

Not for me
I already had on CD
Original Atlantic
Gaswirt
Rhino
MSFL
SACD
None of these are a "problem" sound wise, so the "new"
2014 mix
Flat transfer
Vinyl rip
Alternate version (with live cuts already out out there)
Don't hold much value for myself personally
The surround version is a new experience howeve, very worthwhile
