The term ‘progressive’ has suffered much abuse since its initial heyday applied to the likes of Van Der Graaf Generator and King Crimson as rock stretching beyond its usual constraints. Concept albums have become much derided but Sontaag (sound sculptor Richard Sontaag, lyricist/narrator Ian Fortnam and co-producer Youth) have created one of the year’s most unusual listening experiences with this 21st century take on a sci-fi morality tale.
Recalling anything from Hawkwind’s space rituals and the Moody Blues’ Days of Future Passed to Echoes-era Pink Floyd and the Orb, the action takes place in a distant galaxy where The Ancients have developed the secret of synthesising energy from harmonic sound, giving them the power to reanimate burnt-out planets using huge orbiting sonic generators. Musical fuel is needed to survive, which is where the panoramic soundscapes being unfurled here come in. Brave, new and unashamedly progressive.
