    Prolly something from-
"Henry Cow always wanted to push itself, so sometimes we would write music that we couldn't actually play – I found that very encouraging." - Lindsay Cooper, 1998
"I have nothing to do with Endless River. Phew! This is not rocket science people, get a grip." - Roger Waters, 2014
"I'm a collector. And I've always just seemed to collect personalities." - David Bowie, 1973

If the riff itself is the focus, then the attribution should be to Nucleus, not Soft Machine.

The section that he cited isn't found in Song for the Bearded Lady, as far as I can tell.

Off the top of my head: the middle section of Anesthetize, by Porcupine Tree. Especially the ending of that section, just before it breaks into the final slow dreamy section.

Probably not my favorite, but from about 14:12 - 14:35.

    Focus - Moving Waves

"Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas will probably always be my ultimate fave rock riff by a prog or prog-related band ever
"Wind Him Up" by Saga probably comes in second
"Son and Daughter" by Queen gets an honorable mention
"The Great Deceiver" by King Crimson also gets an honorable mention

Too many, but the one that came to mind now is:

Gentle Giant - Pantagruel's Nativity (Acquiring The Taste). There's a guitar riff that is as heavy, and sick as anything by Black Sabbath.

GG-I Lost My Head, Play The Game
    Mike Keneally-Uglytown, Tomorrow, Scotch
    Zappa-Dirty Love
    Jethro Tull-Teacher
    Steve Morse-On The Pipe

Hard rock, prog, or whatever. Strawbs "Down By the Sea" takes the cake. It's so good that Metallica ripped it off for their song "Welcome Home".

The closing section of Rush's Countdown always gets me grooving.

I could site 100 more riffs I love but this was the first one that came to mind.

Yeah, great pick. My favorite song from ATT. Sabbath influence is obvious here.

Don't remember the Rush's Countdown, but do remember the Manfred Mann's

Soft's Hazard Profile is based on 5 riffs, I suspect. Don't know what's Nucleus , I'm an old-schooler, and have no interest for modern bands.

    Il Rovescio Della Medaglia -Contaminazione

Nucleus was the band where Karl Jenkins, John Marshall and Allan Holdsworth all played before Soft Machine.
