And it's not even the most recent CSNY album. They released Looking Forward in 1999, which was a bit of a return to form, though not up to the early material.

I didn't say it was. I was just saying I thought American Dream was one of their better later albums.

    Crosby is brilliant.

The first CSN (1969) album is magnificent, but If I Could Only Remember My Name stands out as something absolutely, completely unique. I adore that record.

I have been listening to the box set this week in preperation for the concert this weekend. They really have a lot of great stuff both as a group, duo, and solo. One song that really stands out for me is Graham Nash’s “Cathedral”. One of the best acid inspired songs of all time in my opinion. I know they have been doing this one live on recent tours and am hoping they pull it out tomorrow night.

I just watched the AXS documentary. First, these guys can still sing, even at their advanced age. I would see them again in a heartbeat! Second, I had no idea that Steven Stills was 70% deaf! He also seems to have a major league speech impediment. I can't imagine how he can still sing harmonies, but he seems to be able to do it.

Cros is, to my ears, by far, the best of the four.

Every one of his tracks from the first Crosby-Nash album are sublime.

Here's an old solo acoustic clip. Please check out the long, emotional note he holds for an eternity, at 4 min. 45 sec. Awesome

This tune is tighter than a frog's ass ----> The interplay and restraint between Russ Kunkel (drums) and Lee Sklar (bass) is astounding. And the others add a fantastic set of nuances.

Me neither. Has he always been 70% deaf or is this something that progressed over a period of years?

He has apparently always had hearing problems but they have gotten worse as he has aged. He attributes none of it to standing in front of Marshalls for most of his adult life!

Stills seems to be the most cognitively challenged of the three. Crosby, despite the incredible amount of drugs he did, seems the most lucid and thoughtful of the group. He is on his second liver, has 5 stents in his heart, has hepatitis C, and diabetes and is still going! Nash remains exuberant and sharp. His autobiography "Wild Tales" is worth a read.

If I had to pick who I thought was the best musician/singer in CSNY I'd say it's David Crosby. I don't have any of his solo stuff, or any of the Crosby/Nash albums but just from hearing his work with The Byrds and CSN/Deja Vu is enough for me. His electric guitar playing was the best of the 4 guys too (imo). OTOH, Steve Stills is/was a monster too. I didn't know that was him playing Hammond Organ with Humble Pie on "Smokin.'"

I just got home from seeing them. Will post a review tomorrow. Crosby still has the best voice of the 3.

Best music for Heads, most psych: Crosby
    Loudest, dirtiest, rockiest music: Young
    Most cringe-making hippy lyrics: Nash

Hard to argue with that breakdown.

David Crosby's new album, Croz, is superb. Almost as good as If I Could Only Remember My Name...

Best combo without a doubt was Crosby/Nash/Gilmour on Gilmours solo ON AN ISLAND! With the late great RICHARD WRIGHT blending his voice as well I don't need Stills and Especially YOUNG!
The greatest hazard of all, losing one’s self, can occur very quietly in the world, as if it were nothing at all. No other loss can occur so quietly; ¾ an arm, a leg, five dollars, a wife, etc., is sure to be noticed.

Did anyone else have the '98 debut from CPR?
I only had that one, I didn't hear any of the subesquent albums.

    Good post. I mostly agree.

I never thought any of their voices were irritating, though. NY is the most limited but his delivery is so good that you never notice.

Best CSN song for me is "Wooden Ships".
Best CSNY song for me is "Ohio".

Also, I have a C&N album called "Another Stoney Evening". It might be a boot, I'm not sure. It's very good but it's definitely loose...

My favorite combination by far is CSNY minus C, S and N, and adding S,M and T.

While I am a big fan of Stills' playing, Young also is very compelling for his absolutely unfettered, visceral freedom. If anyone in CSNY is the a John Coltrane of the group, it's Ypung. He doesn't have as broad a language, but when he let's loose....well..it truly is like a hurricane

And I think Weld is one of the great live rock albums of the '90s.

That was a great era of live shows too. I went my first Neil show in the late '80s. It started solo acoustic, but when the curtain parted and Crazy Horse kicked in: F**K ME! That was some sound! Weld goes a good way in capturing that.
