Fred is a frequent visitor to Victoriaville, as a result I've been lucky enough to have seen him a number of times including :
Fred Frith / Jean-Pierre Drouet / Louis Sclavis
Fred Frith / Chris Cutler
Fred Frith / Bill Laswell / Dave Lombardo / John Zorn
Fred Frith & Nouvel Ensemble Moderne
Anthony Braxton / Fred Frith
Fred Frith «Cosa Brava»
Art Bears Songbook
I saw him solo in Tel Aviv in 96
Then in 2005 With Chris Cutler here in TLV
Art Bears Song Book at RIO 2010
The Music of Lindsay Cooper 2014
Ive seen 2005 With Chris Cutler
Art Bears Song Book at RIO 2010
Gravity band in Moers Festival
The Music of Lindsay Cooper
And only last month got a chance to see him for the first time in a solo set which actually blew my mind, I did not think it will be as musical as it was.
Second set was with Roget Turner and Tim Hodgkinson, was really good (but that was expected )
You guys suck.
I've been listening to a great Massacre show this morning. Los Angeles at the Whiskey 1981. Fred is KILLING IT. Damn those guys were so good. I wish they had done more albums back then... 1981. I still love the newer ones but that first band was something seriously bitchin.
Yup the original Massacre was like a blueprint
I wasn't aware of any live recording from that era ...
I only have Killing Time but really dig it. What else is essential?
The 1st Massacre is a fantastic warehouse of ideas, but Hayward's drumming on the later discs adds something unique and maybe more nuanced than Maher, (who also obviously can be great). The above track, (Ladder) is a personal favorite...the recording quality of this disc and Live at Meltdown released later is superb. Hugely narcotic stuff in a dark room on a good system.
I've seen him often (and will do again this summer) :
solo (four times), with his guitar quartet, in several free improv small ensembles, with Art Bears Songbook at RIO, with Henry Cow in London...
He's one of the most interesting rock drummers of all time, IMHO - period. Great in the strict environment of Quiet Sun, even greater with the coordinated and calculated machinery percussion of This Heat, and outright tremendous in his various semi-improv or free improv ventures with people like Hugh Hopper, Pierre Vervloesem, Massacre etc. His solo projects (voice, keys, tapes, drums) are idiosyncratic but very, very worthwhile. Hayward belongs to that uniquely sharp and cerebral yet peculiarly lively school of drummers stemming from the "Wyatt approach", along with folks like Chris Cutler, Guigou Chenevier, Daniel Denis, Tatsuya Yoshida, Kerman and so on.
Can't help but to love those dudes.

^ I prefer the guys from Deaf Leper and Poison (aka Arsenic), but those guys are ok too.
Saw him with Naked City in 1991, what an amazing show. He was already one of my heroes but I spent most of the set goggling at Joey Baron turning the whole band on a dime.
Jeez, I saw FF so many times, although not in the last 15 years at all.
Henry Cow x 2
Skeleton Crew x 3
FF Guitar 4tet x 2
FF & Hans Reichel
FF & C Cutler
FF & J Zorn
Solo x 6
Massacre w/Maher x 2
Naked City x 2
+ at Trinity Theater Fest in 1980 and Zu Fest in 1979.
Boy, I'm old.
And that's just off the top of my head. There's probably more....

The 1st time, I had to ferry them around the city and 'entertain' them (except for Fred, who, seemingly, found his own entertainment).
p.s. don't be jealous of being old. You'll get there. Or not, but I wish you the best!
One of the amusing things about getting old is that people become impressed about things you did as a matter of course / a matter of living that you didn't necessarily think about at the time ("You saw Frank Zappa/Soft Machine/Henry Cow/National Health/whoever"? Jealous!", "You went to Stonehenge before they put the fence up and you could actually touch the stones? Jealous!" "You bought a six pack of 'Billy' beer in the store? Jealous!").

Why do I have the feeling that I will need to explain 'Billy Beer' to young Ian.....

Well, seeing Freddie whip it out with Massacre (Maher-rendition) after first having witnessed him with Cow must have been - er - a refreshingly creative impression.

The 1st time I saw Massacre, they were kinda meh.
The 2nd time I saw Massacre (at the Glass Pavilion at John Hopkins Univ., where the photo of Fred on the back of Gravity was snapped) was one of the great, great shows I've ever seen.
And it was the only show by the short - lived Muffins follow-up "Weekend" (The Muffins minus Tom Scott + guitarist Peter Hoepfner).
A wonderful memory and show! See! Being old is great!
