It's terrific. Funny, warm and, most of all, extremely inspiring.
Finally made it all the way through the doc this week. I'm not a musician, and I was inspired to follow my . . . muse? Sure. Muse.

Buzz's approach to his art, his comments on the music industry and what fans will and won't pay for, his honest assessment of the band's bass players--these all endeared me to him (and the band) in a way I never expected. I regret now skipping out on the acoustic solo tour he did. I shan't make that mistake again.

Got through the second disc of the Blu Ray package today, too. A good show with Pinkus on bass. Their cover of "Youth of America" is always groovy and fun.

Man, I got a feeling I need to shore up my Melvins collection. I'm missing huge chunks from the early '00s (all the Jello stuff, most of the Rutmanis years) and early '90s (Lysol and the solo records in particular).

The Melvins return with the new album Pinkus Abortion Technician (April 20, Ipecac Recordings), featuring both ongoing Melvins' bass player Steven McDonald (Redd Kross, OFF!) and Butthole Surfers', and occasional Melvins', bottom ender Jeff Pinkus on bass.

"With our upcoming release, we double your bass player with Steven McDonald AND Jeff Pinkus holding down the bottom," explains Dale Crover. It's an experiment in the low end of the aural spectrum where we asked ourselves, 'would it work?' 'could it work??' 'should it work???' The answers were yes, yes and YES!"

"We've never had two bass players. We've had two drummers and two guitar players so it makes total sense to now have two bass players," adds Buzz Osborne. "We'll be taking this two-prong bass attack on the road as well which should prove to be interesting. Pinkus Abortion Technician is a radically great record and was a stone groove to record. We drank a lot of coffee and enjoyed each other's company. I like Steven and Jeff a great deal. I admire their bass playing and singing and both of them can grill a mean steak."

Been processing the new album all week now.

It's not quite as good as Death, but I think that album is perhaps Melvins' finest hour (it's that good).

I defended an earlier Beatles cover that was slagged 'round these parts. Not sure I'll be as successful defending their cover of "I Want To Hold Your Hand," but I've never liked that song anyway.

Weird mutated blues from Pinkus on "Don't Forget to Breathe." Sludgey, dirthy closer on "Grave Yard," very excellently creepy acoustic intro to "Prenup Butter," mutated Appalachia nightmare on "Flamboyant Duck"--Melvins cover a lot of ground on this one. The two previous proper Melvins albums--the aforementioned Death and Basses Loaded--sit better with me, but if this indeed Pinkus' last album with the band, it's a good note to go out on.

I saw the Melvins live for the first time last year. Was utterly thrilled that they were supported by Redd Kross. Made for a superb night out!

To dismiss Lysol as thirty two minutes of sludge is perhaps doing it a disservice. 'Sacrifice' is one of the great tunes from that period -- and was in the live set from last year. It also features a particularly downbeat cover of Alice Cooper's classic 'Ballad of Dwight Fry'.

While I'm here, some of you Melvins folk might enjoy the new album by Boss Keloid (out Friday). More often than not, the vocals take on a Buzz style and meter. It's a bloody great record.

I haven’t seen (the) Melvins in twenty years. Next Tuesday ends that unfortunate streak.

Going to show at Cat’s Cradle on Sunday. Crover is recovering from emergency back surgery, but Coady Willis of Big Business (and, of course, Melvins) is in.

    They’re playing all of Bullhead.

    And Boris are playing, too.

    Far out.
