The last U.S. show I truly enjoyed watching on network tv was 'Lost'. After that, there hasn't been anything made on U.S. tv that has caught my attention and, when it has, they usually get cancelled. Of the shows you listed, the first 3 seasons of 'Dexter' were pretty good and then it went downhill. I never watched its last season except for the last episode which was disappointing. 'The Walking Dead' I watched the first season but became bored with the show in the second season. The same with 'Homeland', watched its first season but became bored with it. I really enjoyed the Starz series 'Spartacus'. The first season with Andy Whitfield as Spartacus was fantastic. Too bad he passed away but the actor who replaced him was pretty good too, imho. I have tried to get into AMC shows like 'Mad Men' and 'Breaking Bad' but they are not my cup of tea. Most of my tv viewing, especially the last ten years have been British tv series I watch on PBS, BBC America, and/or online (the writing on these shows is fantastic), and other foreign tv dramas like the Danish political drama 'Borgen' (the best political drama series I've ever seen) and, most recently, the French tv series 'The Returned' on the Sundance Channel (I've read there's going to be a U.S. remake of this series). Last year, NBC showed a tv series filmed in Europe called 'Crossing Lines' (starring Donald Sutherland and with an international cast) which I liked and thought it has a lot of potential. Don't know if NBC is going to bring the show back.

Not my words, but a very brief description.

True Detective is an American television anthology drama series on HBO created and written by Nic Pizzolatto, with the first season directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga.[3] Season one stars Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Potts, and Tory Kittles, and utilizes multiple timelines to trace two Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division homicide detectives' hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana across seventeen years.

A bunch of music listeners, mostly into Prog, grumbling around a messageboard and lambasting anyone that likes other forms of music or music not from the 1970s.....Can be very graphic and violent

    How recent is recent?

Watched The Wire a few months back and loved it. Currently finished Season 5 of Mad Men and I think is also an excellent series. Aside from that, I don't watch much except sports on TV.

    How about ...

    Shameless

part comedy, pert tragedy, part drama. But totally compelling, in a crash and burn kind of way.

NCIS is about the only thing I watch anymore. Unfortunately, it has become so formularized the plots rarely surprise me anymore. While the new agent is interesting, I still miss Zeva. I am glad that the focus on Tony has passed.

My favorite current show, though last week's episode seemed a little shark-jumpy.

    Also,
    The Following
    The Bridge

And a few post-apocalyptic shows I've enjoyed to varying degrees,
    Falling Skies
    Revolution
    Jericho

    Game of Thrones
    Justified
Supernatural (watch season 1 to get a feel for it but the real deal is seasons 2-5)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (same pattern as above)
    Sopranos
    Deadwood
    The Americans
True Detective (but man, it is truly dark)

    The Best Ones
Game of Thrones - absolute family favorite
Justified - my wife just wants to see Timothy Oliphant's butt
The Walking Dead - it needs a new direction though
House of Cards - just awesome thinking persons show
    Hell on Wheels - gritty
    Vikings - more gritty
Black Sails - even more gritty
The Borgias - plot twists galore
Newsroom - witty, another thinking persons show
The Blacklist - love it when the bad guy becomes the pseudo-good guy

We will keep watching to see where it goes-shows
The Americans - I like the butts on this show myself
The Following - we will see where this goes this year
Shameless - it just grips you that people can survive like this
American Horror Story - anything could happen next season
True Detective - yeah, it is dark
The Bridge - we will see ...
    Boardwalk Empire

Shows that seem to be falling off a bit:
Revolution - not sure if this one will continue past this season
    Defiance - needs a shakeup
    Hannibal
Longmire - my wife likes him too
    Sleepy Hollow
    Reign
    The Bridge
    Defiance

    Gave up on:
    Haven
    Hannibal
    Downton Abbey
    DaVinci's Demons
    Once Upon a Time
    Merlin
    Grimm
    Vegas
    Under The Dome
    Agents of SHIELD

I don't watch many series, because I don't want to get hooked into watching too much TV. So it's a short list:

The Walking Dead (first my wife watched it too, now it's just me and my 15 YO son. It's a fun father/son thing.)
Game of Thrones (^same as above)
Breaking Bad (we've made it through the first season or two (I've missed some). Definitely good, but there's a lot of it.)

Downton Abbey - we loved the first two seasons, for some reason couldn't stomache more than 30 minutes of season three. It's had its 15 minutes I guess)
House of Cards - the BBC one is great, and my wife loves the Netflix one.

Sherlock - Like Downton Abbey, we loved seasons 1 & 2, but season 3 not so much. I've actually only seen episode 1.
