    Hmmmm:

Sticking with the prog tag as much as possible I'd say:

Yes- america, i've seen all good people, wonderous stories, long distance runaround/the fish
Genesis- abacab/dodo, i know what I like in your wardrobe, follow you follow me, your own special way, the lamb lies down on broadway(title track of course)
ELP-From the beginning, lucky man, still you turn me on
Rush-Tom Sawyer, Closer to the heart, subdivisions
    Marillion-Kayleigh, lavender, easter,
Jethro Tull-aqualung, bungle in the jungle, living in the past
Pink Floyd-money, have a cigar, wish you were here
Kansas-Carry on wayward son, point of know return
Gentle Giant-anything from Octopus(I know they weren't singles but some of them should have been )

    Nothing after Marillion unfortunately.

add "Roundabout" into the Yes list and "Spirit of the radio' to the Rush list above and add

Saga - On the Loose, Wind him Up, The Flyer

    and I'm on board

Musitron mentioned it. Yes, technically it was released as a single but I don't think I've ever heard the single version. Anyway, I'll ok it so you get on board.

If there is one modern prog band who should have had hit singles it would be Spock's Beard. The "day for night" album in particular seems to be loaded with songs begging to be hits. However, only "skin" was released as a single and I can honestly say I've never heard it on regular radio. Oh well. Porcupine Tree had some songs that could have been singles also imo especially from the 96-02 period.

Oh man I forgot all about Saga especially on the loose. The thing is if you put Saga on there then there's an argument you might have to add Asia as well. Both were prog in shorter song format. Saga might have been classier and less overtly commercial but Asia was still pretty proggy for their time period love them or hate them.

Your defintiions of "popular" and "hit" are very fluid, this didn't even get into the top 100, anywhere!

I'll add 3 , all of which happen to be from bands with girl singers :
Curved Air - Back Street Luv
    Renaissance - Northern Lights
Earth & Fire - Weekend (which was a top 10 hit in most of Europe, but not the UK)

  10. #10
Ambrosia - Holding on to Yesterday, Time Waits for No one, was Nice Nice Very Nice a hit? If so, definitely that one.
Jethro Tull - Teacher, maybe Living in the Past (song in 5/4 as a radio friendly song?)
Kansas - in addition to what was listed, People of the South Wind, I think both Paradox and Portrait got a fair amount of airplay and maybe Icarus?
Moody Blues - Legend of a Mind

Dust in the wind...If I had a dollar for every time I've heard it on the radio - I'd have better equipment

    I'd add:

    Alquin - Wheelchair Groupie
Supersister - She Was Naked and Radio
Earth and Fire - Storm And Thunder
Kayak - Wintertime, Mammoth, Lyrics, Ruthless Queen

I'm sure there's more Dutch entries, but I'm from 1970 and I haven't listened to any radio since 1985

    Also:

Barclay James Harvest - Titles, Life Is For Living
Emerson Lake and Palmer - Peter Gunn

And my number one for 'why for crying out loud wasn't this a big hit (or even released as a single'):

    Camel - Lies

  13. #13
Many songs being mentioned that don't meet the OT's 'hit' criteria!

    I'll try!
    OOALH-Yes
    Fanfare for the common man-ELP
    Living in the Past-Jethro Tull
    IKWILIYW-Genesis
    ABITW-Pink Floyd
    Pull me under-Dream Theater
    Carry on Wayward Son-Kansas
    Celebration[minor UK hit]~PFM
    Spirit of Radio~Rush
    I hear you now~Jon & Vangelis

I guess we could bring it more up to date if we include 'hits' by Muse,Elbow & Radiohead?

The only ones I remember actually hearing in regular radio rotation when the album first came out was...

ELP - Lucky Man, In the Beginning
Tull - Living in the Past, Bungle in the Jungle
Yes - Roundabout (the single version), Your Move/I've Seen All Good People

I can think of a bunch that "should have been" regularly played, but these were the only ones I remember being actually played.

Ones I know hit the Billboard Top 40:

    Yes: "Your Move"
    Yes: "Roundabout"
    ELP: "From the Beginning"
    Flash: "Small Beginnings"
Jethro Tull: "Living in the Past"
Jethro Tull: "Bungle in the Jungle"
    Focus: "Hocus Pocus"

...probably some others I'm forgetting. There were also a few that grazed the charts outside the top 40, like "Lucky Man" and Kayak's "Want You to Be Mine" (their "disco sellout" song).

Songs I know charted in the U.K.:

    Yes: "Wonderous Stories"
Genesis: "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)"
ELP: "Fanfare for the Common Man"
    Focus: "Sylvia"
    Renaissance: "Northern Lights"
    Gordon Giltrap: "Heartsong"
    Curved Air: "Backstreet Luv"

    Here's a few I'd like to add.

    Moody Blues - Question
Atomic Rooster - Tomorrow Night & The Devils Answer
The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown - Fire
Brian Auger & The Trinity, featuring Julie Driscoll - Wheels On Fire
Procol Harum - Whiter Shade of Pale
Family - In My Own Time
The Zombies - Time Of The Season
Argent - Hold Your Head Up

Not all would have charted in the States, but still great songs nonetheless.

I once had a go at listing all prog singles that had charted in the UK and US Top 30, but gave up because I couldn't agree with myself over what was prog and what was not!

    Jethro Tull/"Living in the Past"
    Yes/"I've Seen All Good People"
    ELP/"Still...You Turn Me On"
    Pink Floyd/"Arnold Layne"
Genesis/"I Know What I Like in Your Wardrobe" [Is this the actual title?]
    The Moody Blues/"Tuesday Afternoon"
Alan Parsons Project/"I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You"
    Kansas/"The Point of Know Return"

These are all songs I heard on the radio while in high school.

That's all I can recall at the moment except for things like Yes/"Owner of a Lonely Heart"; Genesis/"Abacab"; Asia/"Heat of the Moment"; Alan Parsons Project/"Eye in the Sky"; Steely Dan/"Aja"; Pink Floyd/"Not Now John"; The Moody Blues/"The Voice"...but I wouldn't consider any of these songs bona fide "prog" songs.
    For that which is not,
there is no coming into being
    and for that which is,
    there is no ceasing to be;
yea of both of these the lookers into truth have seen an end.
    Bhagavad Gita
