Jethro Tull '78 (with Uriah Heep opening) = the greatest prog performance I attended

King Crimson '74 = the greatest live band I never saw

Yup, in their prime I would also go with The Who for best all around "rock" band.

The greatest live band ever was the MC5. Hands down. And I say this as a major Magma fan. MC5 live was beyond belief.
I'm not lazy. I just work so fast I'm always done.

    <----Video by me

<---Lucky to have seen them in concert one time and it was incredible

<----To this day the best live band I've ever seen - this was the tour I saw back in 1984.

Jimi Hendrix Experience, 1967, a week before RUX was released. I saw The Who earlier the same day, and as good as they were..... Hendrix, hands down.

Yep, that's not even close to being the Best Live Rock Band Ever.

As Chalkpie said, there are several Zappa bands that could match the talent that Joni had assembled. In 1973 he had George Duke, Jean Luc Ponty, Ruth and Ian Underwood and two of the Fowler brothers. Or how about the 1977 band that recorded Zappa in NY: Eddie Jobson, Patrick O'Hearn, Terry Bozzio, Tom Malone, Lou Marini, the Brecker Brothers, Ed Mann.

So, I just reread the OP and realize that contrary to the title of Best Live Rock Band Ever, he really is looking for best collection of musicians ever on stage, right? I've been considering performance, atmosphere, audience, show, music, and more.

    I guess that's a different thread.
Duncan's going to make a Horns Emoticon!!!

'82 was also fairly adept (ummmm, yeah) and the '88 band did their homework.

Actually the '88 band truly gets my vote for the best live rock band in the history of western music.

I like the original Who mention. Santana live during the Moonflower Tour was a revelation at the time for me and his sound was still quite fresh. I like bands with extra percussion: Santana, ABB, the Who (with Moon superpumped equaled two drummers almost)

Yes from '77 - 79 were ferocious. Especially the opening double slam in yer face of "Siberian Khatru" - "Heart Of The Sunrise" from the Tormato tours. That was a well oiled machine.

Most likely the best live performance I've seen....
In the summer of '71 I went to see Mahavishnu John McLaughlin expecting to hear My Goal's Beyond. Upon entering the very small club I saw Marshall stacks, a black Les Paul, and the biggest drum set I'd ever seen. Turned out to be the premiere performance of the Mahavishnu Orchestra! My ears are still ringing! Good times....

Or at least, the very greatest band that ever got booed off the stage when opening for Aerosmith.
