Thread: Your favorite Tangerine Dream albums?

    Your favorite Tangerine Dream albums?

I already had Phaedra and Rubycon. However, I just got the rest of the Virgin catolog individually and through the 2nd Virgin boxed set. Except, for The Sorcerer and Thief. I love Phaedra and Rubycon. I like the later albums with more percussion and guitar a great deal. All the material is a lot to take in all at once. I can use some guidance and information to direct my exploration into the Tangerine discography.
I was hoping those of you who are already familiar with their albums would put a top 10 list together. Would you please? Comments are welcome. Top ten list does not need to be restricted to the Virgin years. Also, it is OK to list less then 10 if that works for you. Thanks!

Stratosfear is awesome. Ricochet is quite nice as well. Both of those are very spooky and suitable to a contemplative mood.

Tangram and Force Majeure are more melodic, but I absolutely love them anyway. Tangram may actually be my favorite of all of them, but they all serve different purposes for different moods.

    Just don't get "Rockoon." *shiver*

I love Zeit. Unfortunately, I haven't found much else like it in their catalog.

Poland is one of my faves. It's the Johannes schmoeling era. I love all their work right up to underwater sunlight. Then they went off on a path I didn't like. I think the last album I got was tyger tyger?

10 fav TD albums...tough to do with the size of their catalog, but here goes:

    Tangram ( of course)
    Phaedra
    Rubicon
    Ricochet
    Force Majeure
    Poland
    Encore
    Underwater Sunlight
    Logos

All of the Virgin records are very good to excellent. The albums before that are strange to say the least. Zeit probably is their biggest love it / hate it album. When your in the mood it's excellent, when your not, its noise. I know I'll catch a virtual beating but I like most phases of TD. Some of the others post Virgin that I have spun a lot are

    220 Volt
    Heartbreaker
    Le Parc
    Tyger
    Lily on the Beach
    Turn of the Tides
    Mars Polaris
    DM4

I have only picked up an occasional album since the Dante trio of albums. Give them kudos for trying something new but it's not for me. Since then there is just too many releases and too many have a few good tracks with padding added. For TD, Less would be more. Enjoy!

If I had to pick, I think I'd go with Phaedra, Rubycon, Stratosfear, Force Majeure and Logos.
Here's a cheap 10 CD box that covers about a 15-20 year range starting in the late '80s.

It's kind of an odd collection, some of the CDs being standalone albums and others being compilations, and the cover art is the same for each CD, but you can't argue about the price.

Zeit is my all-time favorite, followed closely by Phaedra. My Top 10 list in order would look something like:

    1. Zeit
    2. Phaedra
    3. Rubycon
    4. Atem
    5. Alpha Centauri
    6. Stratosfear
    7. Cyclone (shut up, I love it)
    8. Electronic Meditation
    9. Tangram
    10. Force Majeure

I know there's a lot of love for Ricochet, but it never quite did the thing for me.

Atem through Underwater Sunlight = not a dog in the bunch. Some don't rate as well as others, but nobody likes the same exact ones anyway.

Among the more recent things from TD, there are a few that I've really enjoyed:

    Summer In Nagasaki 2007
Views From A Red Train 2008
    Chandra The Phantom Ferry 2009
    Machu Picchu 2012

Edgar's been churning out way too much product, though. It's become impossible to keep up with, and to separate the wheat from the chaff. But there's still a few good ones among the mess.
Hired on to work for Mr. Bill Cox, a-fixin' lawn mowers and what-not, since 1964.

Although the Virgin albums were my introduction to TD over the years I found that the albums I return most to are Zeit, Atem and Alpha Centauri. Zeit simply sounds like nothing they ever did and would do, Alpha Centauri reminds me an awful lot of Pink Floyd's more out there moments on Saucerful Of Secrets / Ummagumma (live disc).

"Rubycon" has always been my favourite, followed by "Ricochet" and "Encore" (esp. "Cherokee Lane"). I need to explore the immediate pre-Virgin output further, which I've never really done (never been into the really, pre-synths early stuff).

This sounds pretty good to me. Atem is my favorite by far.

Rubycon by a long mile. Then the duo of Force Majeure and Stratosfear. I really like Logos too.
And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.

Anything from El Meditations until Force Majeure is in my top 10

I always loved the first two, especilly Cantauri. I had a harder time with the rhythm-less Zeit & Atem for decades, but nowadays, they belong in my top 10.... Rubycon and Phaedra are easier to get into and make theperfect transition between Atem and Richochet (which was my first album from them, and still mybe my fave with Force)...

On the whole, if I had to eliminate one album from 68 to 79, it would be the soundtrack Sorcerer and replace with Green desert (from 73 and 86)
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

Kind of a strange list, now that I look at it, but:

    Poland
    Thief
    Underwater Sunlight
    Jeanne D'Arc
    Legend
    Zeit
    Tangram
    DM4
Risky Business (for Love on a Real Train alone)
    Cyclone

As long as we're all here, I have to give a pretty big nod to the new side project Loom, with Jerome Froese, Johannes Schmoelling and Robert Waters. They just put out a full length called 'The Tree Hates The Forest' that has some lovely electronic music with nods to both older (80's-era with Schmoelling) and newer TD: http://www.loom-project.de/
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

Also, Ephemeral Sun: it's a thing and we like making things that might be your thing: https://ephemeralsun.bandcamp.com
