Forgotten jazz rock album

I'm trying to remember the name of an American jazz-rock keyboard player that recorded just one acclaimed album in the late Seventies and then abandoned music and disappeared, supposedly living on the streets with a herd of dogs... the CD was finally released a few years back. I seem to remember that the album was recorded for a rock label, and I thought it had come out on Capricorn but I didn't find it in a discography.

Are you thinking of Hermann Szobel? The album "Szobel" was originally issued by Arista Records, went out of print and was unavailable on CD until PE's own Ken Golden at Laser's Edge rescued/reissued it in 2012. Szobel was VERY gifted but faded away.

Yes, I read an article about his story... supposedly he's been 'seen' in disparate place through the years -India, Africa, etc.-,and has not touched a piano since soon after the album came out. Kind of a Syd Barrett story in the jazz-rock world, touching both drug use and mental illness.

The new release is engineered by Bob Katz and is supposed to have very good SQ

Well, with john Abercrombie on guitar, and Marc Cohen on keys, I wouldn't expect anything but a solid release.

The Friends album is awesome. Sort of America's equivalent of Xhol Caravan. I have the LP, but it would be nice to see a CD reissue of this one at some point as well.

And agree with everyone here that the Szobel CD on Laser's Edge is an absolute must pick up.

Well, though not really forgotten, Mc Coy Tyner's 70's albums are generally forgotten by JR/F fans, but they really belong in that category, IMHO... Anything from Expansions (with that National Geographic artwork) until Inner Voices (from 77) is 100 mph fusion.

Szobel was VERY gifted but faded away.

Yes, I think that he recorded the album at a very young age, 17 or 18... He was the nephew of famous concert promoter Bill Graham.

I highly recommend the Szobel album. Interesting blend of musical influences.

Here's a good, mostly forgotten one: Don Cherry's Hear & Now. All kinds of crazy stuff going on with this album.
