In general, not allowing apps from unknown sources, and installing only apps with good reputations is the best way to avoid problems.
Always take FREE with a grain of salt. Most of the time you will pay with some sort of information 'sharing' or ad's.
Popular opinion is that virus scanning apps just suck the battery without much value.

No I don't think I've got anything, it just feels weird not having anything loaded when my laptop has about 4 program loaded.

Android Armour works fine on my Asus tablet. automatically scans updates to applications and gives an alert if an app you just installed ends up containing ads/spam for another application.
