Your favorite free downloads (or 'name your price')

I'm curious about albums that bands or artists offer as a free download, or offer customers to pay whatever they want (starting with nothing). Here a four of my current favourites (and they have all become top 10-albums of that particular year):

    Battle Circus - Battle Circus

Dream The Electric Sleep - Lost And Gone Forever

    Lagartija - Particelle

    Sinister Street - Trust

Edit... just paid for a download after hearing the first half in full, superior music and deserves a higher profile.

Definitely Obiymy Doschu - Elehia (2009)

The band is from Ukraine and unfortunately don't sing in English, but I hope they are still together as they are exceptional.

What good does giving your music away make? People may enjoy it, but its not exactly going to help you in any way. I for one, feel obligatet to pay at least something for what I own. I know Y'all arent as rich as I am (ok, thats a joke) but if you are a fan of music and wish to encourage it, please, at least throw the artist a bone or there will be no more artists. Kudos are worth precisely "dick"

Well, I am a little Rand-ian in that I don't believe in giving value away for nothing. But I priced the Trurl project at close to nothing for several reasons. 1, it's a side project and a labor of love. I did it for my own enjoyment; that was the primary profit. 2, I don't have the time or energy to promote it very hard- I drop a reference here or on Facebook now and then and that's really about it. So, I price it to be appealing. When the day ultimately comes that maybe we give it a proper release that will change. It's interesting to see how many people just pay the basic two bucks and how many decide it's worth a little more to them. It's a bit of an experiment to me. Some day I may reprice the Bandcamp download higher just to see if the perceived higher value actually helps it sell more.

I might either have to widen my horizons into metal or just face the fact that very little up there will be something I like enough buy.

I feel the same way so I give them some money but was always wondering what a good amount would be.

    Any suggestions????

I just checked out a few songs and I'll be getting it this weekend...

    Good stuff....

How would I know if it's of higher value until I get a proper chance to hear it??? With it being on that site is great and way better then just samples but I need to down load it for a real chance to listen to it....

On the contrary. It can help a band expanding their profile. A good example is the debut of Dream The Electric Sleep. Their astonishing debut is a (real) free download, so it helped them to receive attention, and now their second album is due to arrive end of this month, yet this one costs $ 10. Good marketing, from where I stand (as a customer, consumer, music-fan and webmaster).

Here's another just announced today: http://www.jollyband.com/freeaudioguide2download.php

Jolly's "The Audio Guide To Happiness, Part 2" is a free download for a limited time. This is a great release, as is Part 1.
