The Smiths were certainly bigger in the UK than elsewhere, but they were not limited to the UK. Of the five original albums, one made #1 in the UK album chart, and the others all #2, but they also made the US top 60 (Strangeways, Here We Come), the Canadian top 30 (second two studio albums), the German top 40 (Strangeways, Here We Come). The Queen is Dead and Louder Than Bombs went Gold in the US.

It what way "pretty well"? I had a quick look and couldn't see any evidence he'd ever had an album chart, for example.

Both have certainly sold well too. Nightwish has multiple #1s in Finland, three in Germany, been top ten in France. A Platinum and lots of Gold awards in Germany, a Gold award in France. Kamelot's latest album made #79 in the US, #168 in the UK, #65 in Japan, #36 in Germany; and there were similar numbers for the album before.

Zuffanti's projects seem to be aimed squarely at the "Internet-based prog" crowd. And they seem to be generally very successful and highly regarded among that audience. But I don't think those albums have been heard by any sizable crowds in the metal, stoner/retro, post-rock, etc. genres. I spoke with Zuffanti in 2009 at Progday and was happy to find out that he made enough money from music to earn a living, but I suspect he's not making massive amounts of money, and is miles away from getting into the "charts."
