Thread: Zappa question

    Zappa question

Does anyone know if Frank ever played Waka/Jawaka itself, or for that matter, any of the other tracks on side two of the album? I know Big Swifty was played in concert sometimes (though I think typically it was shorter than the album version), but what about the other pieces?

Interesting. I was going to say that if any of his bands played it, it would have been the Petit Wazoo - and it looks like I was correct. Incidentally, I was at the early show that same night.

All they did from One Shot Deal was the "One Shot riff" which is the guitar riff played over the lyric: "But you should be diggin' it while it's happening". That would pop up from time to time in the 73/74 tour.

As far as them playing Waka/Jawaka, are you sure that is listed correctly and not Big Swifty? If it is Waka/Jawaka, it is the ONLY instance I could find of him ever playing it live and it seems odd to me that he would have his band learn the song and only play it once (unless it turned out to be a disaster).

Mike Keneally played Waka/Jawaka live for the 4-night Zappa's Universe shows in the early 90s. I don't think ZPZ has covered Waka/Jawaka. But its one I'd love to see them do.

In case you want to hear it, here's the show mentioned above. Can't say if the listing is correct, though.

I think that might be the early show - I remember some of FZ's stage banter, plus that they started with America Drinks.

    Very disappointing

What was the set list of the Grand Wazoo at the Hollywood Bowl? I was at that show but can't remember what from Waka they played.

Thanks. I couldn't remember ever hearing Waka Jawaka itself. Really admire his large ensemble pieces. I saw him do Approximate several times. He seemed o like doing that live.
