    Opera Singing

I recently got a little kick in the pants for checking out some Opera singing (ers) - can anyone recommend some that would be good for a noob?

    Much appreciated.

I sat next to this girl in the second and third grades. Her mother was the music teacher at our school. Even at that young age she was winning singing contests locally and regionally:

She's got a great instrument... but I don't care for opera.

I like old Caruso recordings, very nice background music.

Working my way through this one. If you don't have time to sit through a complete opera
there are plenty of "favorite" aria CDs. Joan Sutherland, Kathleen Battle, Kiri Te Kanawa,
and Rostropovich's wife, the fantastic Galina Vishnevskaya.

Speaking about Tristan, this performance of famous Liebestod is so intense and gripping it's beyond words to describe. HD version full volume recommended!

And, may I add some more words for you... If you go to YouTube and start entering "Nessun dorma" you will automatically get these suggestions from YouTube: "Nessun dorma Pavarotti" (as has been posted in this thread) or even "Nessun dorma Bocelli" (ugh), sorry for that. But, trust me, you should enter "Nessun dorma Corelli" instead and you will get following clip:
"The world will soon be right again,
Innocence and undying love will reign."

Me neither; can't stand that style of singing, sorry! That's why the only Wagner I own is a collection of overtures and preludes. I don't mind choirs, but solo classical vocals just tweaks my nervous system.

I can see the artistry, the difficulty is evident, and the skill of these singers is on display (unlike other styles I can't stand). Can't explain why opera leaves me cold.

I used to feel this way, but the more I listen, the more I enjoy various classical vocal styles. I'm still not crazy about Italian opera, but I enjoy some of the Russian and German stuff. Especially Mussourgsky's Boris Godunov, and Borodin's Prince Igor. I also enjoy German lieder by Mahler, Berg, and Schoenberg. Berg's Nacht is one of my favorites.

I would highly recommend Enrico Caruso and Max Lorenz. And especially the dvd documentary of Lorenz called "Wagner's Mastersinger, Hitler's Siegfried".
