And certainly earlier. The viola organista, heard here, is a sort of multiple hurdy-gurdy originally conceived of by Leonardo daVinci. Examples were built in the 1500s and later, but they've been lost, and the guy in the interview - Slawomir Zubrzycki, a Polish pianist and instrument-builder - had to figure out all the details by himself.
However, I'd love to hear something on it besides Baroque music. It shares with the Mellotron a problem of slightly flaky articulation, and Baroque music is all about crisp articulation - 16th and 8th notes marching precisely along. For example, how would "Watcher" sound on the viola organista?
