    Ronald Shannon Jackson-RIP

Lousy way to start a Sunday morning, to hear this sad news.Drummer/Bandleader Ronald Shannon Jackson passed away from leukemia at age 73.

Jackson played with most of the luminaries of the free jazz scene in the 60s and 70s,including Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler and Cecil Taylor.

He formed The Decoding Society, his 'free-funk' band in 1979 and populated it with bad-ass young talent, among them Vernon Reid(guitar), Melvin Gibbs(electric bass) and many others.I first saw The Decoding Society at South Street Seaport in NYC(81/82?) and they tore the joint up.Rhythm galore, delivered with electric and eclectic fury.I saw the band several times over the ensuing years and was never disappointed.

    Thanks for the music.

WOW. Jeeez. Thanks for the news and so sorry to hear.

In the early early 80s in DC, one of the best things that would make their way here, were the early punk jazzers, especially Defunkt and The Decoding Society.

I saw the Decoding Society at least 5 times, and as Walt says, they never disappointed.

Loved his stuff, Decoding Society and solo work....sideman work......playing "Nasty" right now...

    Sad news, for sure.

Was for sure one of the greats...never caught any of his performances, but really like the Last Exit and Decoding Society stuff so far. Got turned on to him from a drummer friend of mine who raved for weeks after getting his head realigned by a Decode Yourself era gig, (which apparently was a lot better and tighter than the record).

The news of RSJ's passing deeply saddens me. In the early 80's as I was starting to branch out from listening to music other than rock & roll, his albums Nasty, Barbeque Dog and Mandance were hugely important to me and remain so to this day.

    Rest In Power, RSJ...
