Best short prog song from before prog even existed:

The Beatles - Happiness is a Warm Gun. You get an awful lot for your 2:43 in that one...

A little secret - Tickmeyer had come up with that great drum part which we all liked but it wasn't really Chris' sort of thing. So I played the drums but let Chris play the hi hat, and then we came with a funny combination of our names (something like Chrob Cutrake) on the album credits.

Family most definitely mastered the short-tune concept. "From Past Archives" is yet another fave.

Would I lose all prog credibility if I told you I loved this song when I was 14 and still think the opening is pretty epic?

Speaking of Procol Harum, how about "skip softly my moonbeams." That's maybe the first genuine short prog tune.

I have no problem considering "Whiter Shade of Pale" a prog tune. But the whole "Shine on Brightly" album seems to be the blueprint for everything Genesis did until 1974.

Someone had to say it, and it happened to be you.

It did get quite a bit of FM radio airplay, at least in St. Louis.
