Thread: Favourite bass player?

  1. #126
For the first time I'm able to bring something to this board you guys might be unfamiliar with. Kinda hard aroundthese parts.

In 1989 I saw Steve Morse and Tony Smith was the opening act. Guy played bass for forty five minutes and totally killed. Never heard of the dude before and it wasn't until a few months ago I heard of him again. I'm downtown, at the Fremont Street Experience and there's this dude ripping it up, just sitting on his rig having a grand time. I guess he lives here, why else would he be downtown with all the crazies?

I looked him up and he once toured with Larry Carlton and there's a clip of him at NAMM with Victor Wooten, so he's been around just not in genres that I listen to.

Mark Andes was just an ok player imo, pretty typical of the era.A few nice lines here and there an a good sound, but a lot of stiff parts and played some awful solos.

For someone from the west coast scene with similar chops i'd take the first Love bassist.Stuff like Old man and You set the scene were quite cool for a guy with rudimentary technical ability.

When did he play with them? I recall, and like, the work Graham Simpson, Sal Maida, John Wetton and John Gustafson did with them.

according to Roxymusic.com, Alan Spenner played on the albums Manifesto, Flesh and Blood and Avalon, and I also read that he was on The High Road DVD.

I saw Mike Stern last Friday night and Tom Kennedy was playing bass (upright and electric) with him. Damn, he sounded great! He kinda stole the show! I'm not saying he's now my favorite, but he's definitely a guy who doesn't get enough recognition.

Hansford Rowe (Gong, Gongzilla) needs to be mentioned-

Gotta mention Present's Keith Macksoud, listening to "No 6" right now and he sounds incredible.
