The kids are alright. Nice cover.

If you want something to fill the Tool void, try "Sound Awake" by Karnivool. Not totally a Tool rip-off, but some really great songwriting, the bass player is fantastic. Soen was a great suggestion as well. But yeah, I've been a Tool fan since after Undertow and still remember listening to Aenima the day it came out from front to back in 1996. That is a great memory.
I sometimes feel the need for Tool & nothing else, but they're still relegated to the "don't play if Kay's within earshot" section of my storage.

I like Tools music but find difficulty with their lyrics and themes. I basically like positive life affirming "happy" themes. Tool not so much. I can live with dark, intense, moody, and even wicked in a fantasy kind of way, but Tool seem so negative and almost hateful. Am I misunderstanding or how do you find the beauty in the brutality? I like Opeth after all, and I'm not sure what the difference is. Any thoughts?
Tool just sound very cleansing to me. I've never found anything hateful about the music, more just using dark themes as catharsis. In fact, for example, MJK has gone on record as saying that the video for the song Prison Sex, has been used as positive therapy for people who suffered sexual abuse as children, so I guess it depends on your point of view.
I listened to Aenema hundreds of times, at a low point in my life, and it helped me find a way to work through it. Other people that I have talked to, have related the same tale. YMMV, of course.

love tool and hope there is a new album and tour
Listening to Undertow for the first time in several years. It's not as complex as what came after but still a pretty intense experience.
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart
Happy music depresses me, I love Tool

I blame Wynton, what was the question?
There are only 10 types of people in the World, those who understand binary and those that don't.
The funny thing about them sounding "evil" on occasion reminds me about the song "Die Eier von Satan". Hey, it has Satan in the title and MJK is ranting in German. So, what's the lyrics about? It was a cookie recipe.
If/when they do another album, I hope it's better than that last one. I have a feeling they peaked with Lateralus.
I've tried many times to get into Tool, without success. They are one of those bands I really should like, but they get no traction at all in my brain.
What are the Tool songs that will finally make this band "click" for me?
I'll give it a shot with a song from each album that nails tool home for me.
Goes without saying that these songs deserve maximum volume from the best sound system available for proper immersion in the sound.
4*
This song has it all, classic Justin "lead" bass, overpowering Carey drums, instant earworm riff from Adam, and classic scream and vox by Maynard:
Forty-six and 2
Something about "numbers" songs with this band?
This song has everything that 4* has, with so much more. This video includes the lyrics, which are awesome. I saw them play this on the Lateralus tour at MSG, and it was close to a transcendent experience. What an tremendous crescendo ending!
Parabol + Parabola
Two songs that I consider one (oneness?), Parabol foreshadowing the absolute explosion ahead in Parabola. Another near orgasmic song live. tool is one of those bands that transcend their studio output live because of the incredible immersive experience they are on stage.

The Pot
Best song for me on 10,000 days. Subject matter is very nice btw...

Huge Tool fan here for a long time.
A new album would be great but I'll not hold my breath it will arrive any time soon!
Since tool is still trying to extricate themselves from a legal quagmire, perhaps folks like me might be interested in another band that sounds a lot like tool jr?
Friend of mine told me about them a couple months ago. They ain't new (1995) and they have sold 4 million albums. (whoknew)
Decent alternative worth a listen IMV...

Love Tool. They are they perfect style of metal for my ears. Dark and with a lot of crunch. I love the bass and drums.
