    "Unsung" hard rock bands

These are guys who, though they may've gotten *some* recognition, haven't been canonized like their far more well-known brethren like say, AC/DC, Van Halen or Zeppelin.

Who would you put on that list? I guess older acts count most, but nothing stopping us from recent acts.

1st one I'd put down would be Budgie.

    Vanilla Fudge
    Blue Cheer
Legs Diamond (their 70' output, I like them)
    King's X
    ...and agree with Budgie

    One word: Zebra

    Two letters: Y&T

So let's see how long it takes for someone to criticize my choice of In Rock We Trust as the "representative" album, because dontcha know, they'd already gone down the tubes by then. (shrug) I think it's a good rock n roll record, Don't Stop Runnin' was the first thing I ever heard by them. And This Time was one of the best power ballads ever, shoulda been a hit.

Definitely Zebra. I have to go with 3.V though. I'd also say Bigelf- afaik they are cult enough but maybe I'm wrong...

And we might as well also bring up the one and only decent record Yngwie Malmsteen ever played on:

And of course, there's this, with a certain Zappa escapee replacing Yngwie:

The Tubes probably don't count as hard rock (more like art rock or even art pop, if there is such a thing) but they certainly deserve more recognition than many less talented but more recognizable names.

I'll go with some newer bands that although have some exposure, are not all that well known but kick hard rock ass:

    Rival Sons
    Black Stone Cherry
    The Parlour Mob
    Gaslight Anthem
    The Answer

If you are into classic hard rock, any of these newer bands should scratch that itch.

    RUSH (first album only)
Angel (although I've never actually heard them)
City Boy (although maybe a little shy of "hard rock")
    Uriah Heep
UFO (although I'm not that familiar with them I know their reputation)
    Thin Lizzy (see above)
    Pavlov's Dog
    Crack the Sky
    Zebra

I'm glad to see April Wine and Budgie mentioned. I forgot about them.

Also, surprised to see no mention of Nazareth yet.

Wouldn't Pavlov's Dog be prog rock(not hard rock)?

Why can't a band be both? I actually think their first album was more of a rock album with mellotrons and not really prog. The second one("at the sound of the bell")had Bill Bruford on drums and also some more proggish tracks but was more prog and even kind of Canterburyish in places but the first one at least was more of a hard rock album. They really imo weren't more of a prog rock band than Uriah Heep or BOC.

Is this from an American perspective i.e. success in the USA? Becasue both UH and TL were huge in the UK. Thin Lizzy was way bigger in their day than AC/DC or Van Halen.

First group that comes to mind is Cactus. Others that I think are criminally underrated (at least here on the East coast of the USA) are:

    MC5
    The Dictators
    Dust
    The Faces

I'll echo Budgie, Good Rats, Raven, Captain Beyond and of course, ANGEL! (although with their heavy synth work on the first two albums they straddle a hard rock/prog sound)
You say Mega Ultra Deluxe Special Limited Edition Extended Autographed 5-LP, 3-CD, 4-DVD, 2-BlueRay, 4-Cassette, five 8-Track, MP4 Download plus Demos, Outtakes, Booklet, T-Shirt and Guitar Pick Gold-Leafed Box Set Version like it's a bad thing...
