    Steve Howe Trio UK tour

Woo! (That's me, raising the excitement level.) The Steve Howe Trio, i.e. the jazz trio with Steve Howe on guitar, Ross Stanley on keyboards and Dylan Howe on drums, are currently on a short UK tour (before Yes reconvene in the studio next month). They are also working on a new album for release late this year.

I'm seeing the band in London (Pizza Express Jazz Club, Soho) tomorrow night (Wednesday 18th). The set list earlier on the tour has included some new material, some adaptations of Yes pieces (one new, others as on prior live work) and some other jazz covers. See www.bondegezou.co.uk/wnsh.htm#trio for spoilers.

Great band, in my view. I thought they were brilliant on their two previous tours and am looking forward to tomorrow.

Steve Howe and Ross Stanley are both also playing on Dylan Howe's forthcoming Subterranean: New Designs on Bowie's Berlin, due with a supporting tour late 2013/early 2014, and consisting of interpretations of instrumentals from David Bowie's albums Low and "Heroes".

Music isn't about chops, or even about talent - it's about sound and the way that sound communicates to people. Mike Keneally

I think his son is a fine player. I bought one of his earlier quintet albums. Very Blue Note-y cover. Very Blue Note-y sound. Too bad old Weimar émigrés Wolf and Lion (never realized their last names together would be so reminiscent of wild life) are no longer with us.

he put on a stage show of his Bowie project a couple years ago. Looking forward to this record!

perhaps the most talented players Steve plays with these days, even if, generally speaking, the organ trio as a format is kind of played out (I saw Pat Martino in this format and came away bored out of my mind). Excluding the Doctor with Kriesberg of course.

I'm curious: has Billy B. ever caught any of the trio gigs in the UK? It's sort of sad that he retired just when Steve Howe took up playing more straight jazz.

Also, has it ever been commented on how much of an influence Bill was on Dylan's playing?

Bruford gave Dylan lessons and they know each other. Bruford wrote the liner notes to one of his albums. So, yes.

Just back from the London show. Very good. I didn't have much of a view, being at the back of the club (next to the family table, with Zoe, Virgil and Jen Howe among others), but great playing from all three. A longer show than the one on Dime, so also including a Joni Mitchell cover and Steve did a solo piece on electric guitar as a first encore. (It appears the Dime show had a shorter set than most of the tour.) Venue sold out.

I've never checked out the Steve Howe Trio, and I'd like to. Perhaps I'll bump them up in the 'Look For' category.

While (very loosely) on the subject, I always quite liked Steve Howe's Remedy, which also featured Dylan (and Virgil). That Elements album is now ten years old and I've listened to it quite a lot in that time, much more so than many of Steve's solo albums.

Can't tell you how many times I've quoted and agreed with Steve from Grand Scheme. "Nothing's any good, anymore". So true in so many ways

Dylan has drummed on many of his father's solo albums, but wait until you hear the Trio or his other work. He really comes through and shines in the Trio, as does organist Ross Stanley; indeed Dylan/Ross are a big part of the musical direction of the Trio, pushing Steve into new areas.

Dylan's own solo work is good. His duo with pianist Will Butterworth have done a fantastic version of Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring": see http://www.amazon.ca/Stravinsky--Rit...dp/B0036PVUBY/

Virgil is also a strong musician. He has a great composition on Steve's Time (most recent solo album). http://www.bondegezou.co.uk/wnoth.htm#dylan seq. has details on the extended Howe family's outputs.
