Django Reinhardt. What else do I need?

I've had Djangology for a while.

And I just ordered this one:

Looks like there's some overlap between the sets. On Vogue is supposed to have decent notes; Djangology has none.

Between these two, is there any period or band that I'm missing out on. Huge fan and hate to think I'm missing some gold. Thanks!
I want to dynamite your mind with love tonight.

Great question - I've wanted to explore his catalog for a while now. I love what I've heard over the years.

I only have a couple discs, which I bought a long long time ago. However, anything that covers his time with Stephane Grappelli and the Quintet of the Hot Club of France (1936-1937) is essential.

You probably have those recordings already, though.

i'm certainlyno expert on Reinhardty, but being half-belgian, we were flooded with his works on the radios (my parents had two albums as well), but my take on this is that if you have the Grapelli collab, you're doing fine... everything he's done is a bit samey-sounding, AFAIK...

Of course, the fact that his short careeer (died in his early 40's in the 50's) made that he's not had much of chance to foray into other styles
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

The JSP label has a multi-disc set which, IMO, is all you need.

I have these. It's not an organized or intentional collection. It was compiled by grabbing what was available as I ran across them. So there is sure to be overlap, but each disc sounds good when I listen, so why not?

I also recommend American guitarist John Jorgenson, who has several albums and a movie (Head In The Clouds) of Django Reinhardt style music. He really is quite good at it. I have heard him play that music live. This disc is awesome:

And there won't be any shade to cool the monument to prove that we were here. - Gene Parsons, 1973

Looks like this new set that I ordered includes the JSP material and some of the big band stuff. Plus, again, the new notes.

This is a really nice set. There's no overlap with the other box I have ( so far--I still have a few discs to spin). I may yet grab some of the sets spellbound posted above, but this one is pretty damn good if you only need one set. The liner notes with recording dates and musicians are a big bonus.

Lots of good electric work from Django, too.

I got hold of the DVD of Head In The Clouds, so I will get to see John Jorgenson as Django Reinhardt as soon as I have time to watch. As a bonus, Charlize Theron and Penelope Cruz. So my eyes won't be hurting.
