My review of The Swallow Quintet's Into the Woodwork, today at All About Jazz.
It's been seven years since bassist Steve Swallow's last recording as a leader, and for Into the Woodwork he introduces a quintet that began as a quartet, until drummer Jorge Rossy (ex-Brad Mehldau Trio) got wind of it through friends Steve Cardenas (guitar) and Chris Cheek (saxophone), who were members of the group, along with Swallow's partner in music and life, Carla Bley (who sticks with organ here).
The result? After having already toured, Into the Woodwork feels like a band, and a terrific one at that - possibly Swallow's best group ever. With a new set of Swallow compositions played by a quintet that means it, it's also one of his best recordings as a leader.
