Not sure if this has been listed before, but if not, for King Crimson fans who've not heard renegade French trumpeter/occasional singer Médéric Collignon and his group le Jus de Bocse's sophomore effort "à la rechereche du ROI FRIPPÉ," following the tremendous electric Miles tribute, 2010's Shangri-Tunkashi-La, my recommendation? Get it, and get it now.
I've never heard a Crimson tribute quite like this one: 21st Century Schizoid man re-imagined as a string quartet; Larks Tongues' in Aspic Part II & III brought together back-to-back as a kick-ass improvisational workout for this largely trumpet/Rhodes/bass/drums quartet, while still staying true to the song's defining characteristics - even Collignon's singing on tunes like "Frame by Frame" and "Facts of Life" work, though it's his trumpet playing that makes the set.
Covering Crimson's entire history - from In the Court of the Crimson King ("21st Century Schizoid Man"), LTIA (the title track, part II) and Red (the title track), through Discipline ("Frame by Frame," "Indiscipline"), Three of a Perfect Pair ("LTIA Part III"), Thrak ("Vroom Vroom") and The Power to Believe ("Facts of Life," "Dangerous Curves"), Collignon also includes a couple of self-penned intros/outros and discrete songs, plus a version of Nick Drake's "Riverman" that might seem out of place...only it isn't.
Not just the best Crimson tribute I've ever heard, but one of this year's best releases, period. Available at all amazon outlets.
