Katatonia - tour dates (with Tesseract, Cult of Luna, Paradise Lost and more)

Ahead of the release of the new "remixed" version of their last album, "Dethroned & Uncrowned."

    Dates here:

Looks like for the US tour they'll be with Cult of Luna, Tesseract and Intronaut. The Europe dates look like Paradise Lost and possibly others.

    Good dark times ahead

    So....saw the show last night:

Tesseract - sounded really great, particularly on the material from 'Altered State.' To be honest, the singer struggled a bit with the stuff from 'One' where the vocals needed to be more aggressive but the music was so strong, that's a very minor complaint.

Intronaut - all those guys were fantastic players, but for whatever reason the music didn't engage me that much. Still glad to have seen them.

Cult of Luna - oh WOW. These guys delivered and then some. Fantastic run-throughs of the material including absolutely scorching versions of 'I: The Weapon' and 'Vicarious Redemption.' Except for the interludes between songs, this was pretty much all live too; no backing tracks that I could tell. It was powerful and well-executed. Hands down the highlight of the evening.

Katatonia - I've seen them before and knew what to expect. In all fairness...having them AFTER Cult of Luna was a bit unfair because Katatonia is very tethered to backing tracks and the energy just isn't the same. Jonas is a great singer but doesn't project as well live either. For those that hadn't seen them before, it was probably a great time; for me, I listened to about 3-4 tracks and headed home.

Katatonia is definitely a band where the mix has to be perfect or they just aren't that engaging. When I saw them open for Opeth in the Fall of 2011 the sound was perfect and I actually enjoyed them more than Opeth. When I saw them open for Opeth again this Spring the sound was marginal and I really disappointed. Opeth was amazing that night though.

Thanks for the assessment John. I will be seeing this show at their Bay Area stop and of the line-up look forward most to Cult of Luna, so I am glad to read your enthusiastic response to their set.

In fact, I may skip tesseract, seen them when they mattered :P , and probably won't stay for Katatonia as neither are really my cup of tea any longer.
