About: Ahleuchatistas follow up their 2013 USA tour opening for Buke and Gase with an appearance at the Hopscotch Music Festival and several US dates. After pushing the limits of musical expression to its far flung edges for over 5 years, touring the world with gusto, harnessing the forces of nature, and honing the telepathy between artist and audience, guitarist Shane Perlowin and drummer Ryan Oslance take the fire on the road. Ahleuchatistas has received critical acclaim for their 2012 album Heads Full of Poison (Cuneiform Records/Harvest Recordings).
"...knotty, instrumental rock that blends punk, prog, jazz, non-Western music and improv into something exhilarating and even awe-inspiring." – Phil Freeman, The Wire
"I first saw this guitar and drums duo last month, in their home town of Asheville, N.C. during Moogfest. The festival is often thought of as just an electronic music festival and it does skew in that direction, but it primarily celebrates the creative souls in music and in doing so honors the spirit of electronic music pioneer Robert Moog. The sonic palette of guitarist Shane Perlowin and drummer Ryan Oslance certainly fits that description. I also hear these influences as I listen to Ahleuchatistas: the guitar inventions of Robert Fripp and even progressive rockers Gentle Giant, but also sounds that span the globe with styles that can feel North African or Asian." - Bob Boilen, NPR Music

“…they lurch swiftly from speed metal to thrash punk to a kind of heat-stroke minimalism. There’s noise and fire in their playing, but most of these tunes are also studded with signposts, demanding close attention and clear execution. …” – Nate Chinen, NY Times

"It makes sense that they've landed on John Zorn's Tzadik label, which is known for housing a lot of music that would sooner hit you with a shovel than caress or soothe you." - Joe Tangari, Pitchfork

North Carolina instrumental rock duo Ahleuchatistas belong to the beyond-category sector of such iconic, genre-flouting combos as John Zorn’s Naked City, Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band, Swans, Tortoise, and Sun City Girls.
Ahleuchatistas combine wicked precision with intense abandon, droll humor with analytical construction, and a sly gregariousness with uncompromising vision. This pair interweaves elements of punk rock, jazz, classical music, speed metal, grindcore, progressive rock, noise, folk musics from Asia and North Africa, electronic music, and ambient aesthetics, along with volatile, unpredictable improvisation, flowing organically in a virtual world of their own. With a devoted international cult following, Ahleuchatistas is considered by many to be one of the most innovative and ever-developing instrumental groups of the past decade. Cerebral but never ponderous, Ahleuchatistas make immediate music that reaches for the mind, heart, and gut.
