There's a couple of kids whose style-hopping is limitless. I think they go by John 5 and Buckethead

Yeah, that's Steve Morse. He's also got monster classical and bluegrass abilities.

Being able to play with your own voice but still within the clear framework of various established styles is quite different from creating a relatively unique style imo.

Steve Howe, Beck, Morse, govan etc for the first

Hendrix, Fripp, Frith, Kaiser(terrible player though imo) Holdsworth, sharrock etc for the latter

True. There are many established studio players who can dish up whatever style is called for in the studio. There are very few session guitarists however who can carry a band with their personality.

You may be right about the band setting but I STILL can't forget the solo appearance of Tommy Tedesco on the Gong Show wearing a tutu. Classic!!

    I nominate Steve Lukather.

    Although, I concede that he's mostly a rock/fusion guy.

I recall reading that Steve Howe was a fan of Roy Smeck.

My first thought is Steve Hackett... He certainly dabbles in all genres in his albums and discography

Good call on Spedding, even if he renegs his jazz & jazz-rock days
Russel is mostly avant-garde stuff I"d say (unmless he guests on different artistes not in his genre
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

Yeah, but that's for the "Ukuleleist Outside Genre" thread.

Sonny Sharrock fans: Sorry, but I can't think of any guitar player in history that I ever liked less. It'd be silly and futile to argue about it since we all have our own tastes, but let's just say I never "got it" and never will.
