He has NOT retired from music. In fact, he sang on a recent Late Night With Jools episode; last week I think. It was not a repeat and he spoke with Jools prior to performing a Motown tune. Interesting that he sees himself as a DRUMMER still to this day. No mention of his back problems and he looked/sounded great!
"Henry Cow always wanted to push itself, so sometimes we would write music that we couldn't actually play – I found that very encouraging." - Lindsay Cooper, 1998
"I have nothing to do with Endless River. Phew! This is not rocket science people, get a grip." - Roger Waters, 2014
"I'm a collector. And I've always just seemed to collect personalities." - David Bowie, 1973
The Alamo thing wouldn't surprise me. He apparently narrated a documentary on the Alamo. From what I understand it was a childhood interest of his that has rediscovered due to more free time.
As for him being retired from music, according to his wikipedia page he has indeed retired from music.
