Have you ever heard of a band called the Allman Brothers?
What can this strange device be? When I touch it, it brings forth a sound (2112)

I don't consider them the usual suspects but I am admittedly not that familiar with the scene.

I always forget that early Kansas was not all prog - some 'Southern Boogie/Rock' type of songs were produced by them

Yeah, I was going to mention Kansas since they are not the usual suspects when it comes to this style. HOwever, I think only some of their stuff would qualify as "boogie" or "southern" rock. In the early days at least it was mostly prog with a few boogie tracks or hard rock songs mixed in.

Way back in the day, Kansas, like Little Feat, Ted Nugent and even acts from other countries such as Mahogany Rush and Foghat were more or less adopted by Atlanta fans as southern rockers, mostly due to the efforts of Alex Cooley, who was basically the southern version of Bill Graham. This place was a hotbed of rock in early to late 70's.

IMHO, Kansas' most southern boogie rock album is Monolith

Well, I'd like to think that Atlantians are open-minded enough to adopt musicians from elsewhere without identifying them to southern rock... coz Mahogan Rush don't sound too Skynyrd-y to me ..

I've heard some stuff I hadn't before (I knew PB) so far, but let's face it... nothing groundbreaking or gebre-renewing

Short of Skynyrd that list defines "usual suspects" for me Mama's Finest were a great band- part funk, part Zeppelin ripoff, part boogie band.

What I meant to imply was that the groups mentioned were adopted home-town bands because they played and/or recorded here. Some even chose to reside in Atlanta. It doesn't all have to be "Skynyrd-y", hence other true southern acts like Big Star or REM.

Mother's Finest, speaking of which spawned another band called Illusion (yeah, I know, there's 50 bands named "Illusion"), led by Mo Moore and BB Borden. Not commercially successful, but very popular within the ATL bar circuit. They could even get a little bit proggy, but we're talkin' 80's here folks.

I like these bands a lot.

LLC is from northern Indiana, but sound like they're from northern Tennessee.
