none of those mentionned so far particularly strike as good... but then again, regnizeable doesn't mean good

Ted Nugent's "stranglehold" must be on the list somewhere.

Also, this little ditty called "shilinderia pramataurus" about little fish or something like that. Roundabout for that matter too but I'm sure hardly anybody on this site would know those two.

I would also nominate "the real me" or maybe "my Generation."

Either you're mispelled Heart Of The Sunrise, or else you've never heard it...

Yeah, I immediately thought of My Generation

Tull's "Living In The Past" is a great one... not the most famous but certainly recognisable, at least on FM classic rock radio.

Roundabout, agreed. Next, Sunshine of Your Love, Then, Taxman. Then, Somebody to Love.

Two bass lines that deserve accolades:

    Family-How-Hi-The-Li(from Entertainment)
    John Mayall-California(from The Turning Point)

When I'm thinking Bass Line, the first one that comes into my mind is Wishbone Ash's Sometime World (the faster part). Provides a beautifully melodic and prominent foundation while the guitar solos and vocal melodies are riding on top of it.

I prefer White Rabbit with Casady's Spanish bass

For the classic generation, Paperback Writer and Come Together would be two. Paul had a bunch of them.

You said 'rock' not just 'progressive rock' right? How about Sly & The Family Stone?

Has anyone mentioned Pink Floyd's "Money"?

    Walk on the wild side?
    Seinfeld?
    Okay, not rock I know.

    Superfly

    Come Together

    Ricki Don't Lose That Number

    Walk on the Wild Side

my *favorite* is possibly Tull's Journeyman, but nobody other than Tull fans would recognize it.

While we're at it, if we're talking "recognizable" bass lines as opposed to "interesting" bass lines, you open it up to stuff like Running With The Devil...

Both these are kinda/sorta in that the bass is mimicing/augmenting the rhythm guitar, but ...
    Chicago - '25 or 6 to 4'
    Pearl Jam - 'Jeremy'

    II've always liked:
    Jethro Tull - 'Hunting Girl'

The recurring line in "Riders on the Storm". That thing is hypnotic!

The main figure in "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" always gets me, too!

Lots of funk comes to mind, "Brick House" by the Commodores and "September" by EW&F to name two! Speaking of funk, why not Grand Funk?! The line in "Closer to Home" makes the song!

Besides some previously mentioned, I would add:

Chili Pepper's version of "Higher Ground"
"Another One Bites the Dust" - Queen
    "Lowrider" - War
    "Anesthesia" - Metallica
