    Father & Son

The following is a real conversation that I had with my 13 year-old son tonight...

Son: Dad, do you know what the coolest KISS song is?

    Me: Yes. Do you?

    Son: Yep, "Detroit Rock City"!

    Me: Nope. It's "Deuce".

You gotta learn 'em while they're still young.

If you're gonna learn 'im young, the correct answer is "None of 'em."

    Nah'. That just dates you.

However, the correct answer is 100,000 Years.

    God no!

Shock Me is a freakin' novelty song!

If you're gonna pick a song that Ace wrote, then personally I'd go with Parasite, closely followed by Strange Way. If it's one that Ace wrote and sang...then we'll never come to an agreement.

How about Talk To Me? Or Rocket Ride? Those were pretty good songs!

One of my kids recently heard "Rock and Roll All Night" for the first time on the way to his music lesson. He listened for a bit, said, "It's a good song," listened a little longer, "but sounds really easy."

    I agree with your son.

The correct answer is, "Why are you listening to that? Oh yeah, you're 13."

Actually, when he asked me, my first thought was "why in the hell is he listening to KISS?". The thing is when he hears something that appeals to him, he immediately goes to YouTube and checks out other stuff. Not to worry. I just pointed him out to a recent YT vid of Ace Frehley without the gettup and he lost all interest.

Did you also teach him that there's absolutely no point in listening to any music by Kiss unless they were actually wearing their facepaint while the music was recorded?

I had VH1 classic on the tv as background while I was on the computer. My son (age 10) walks in right as Motley Crue's "Girls Girls Girls" video came on, which is full of scantily clad women. After a minute or so, I asked him what he thought. He replied "the video is cool, but the song is horrible". I was a proud father.

Yep, a good lesson of form over function.

Has he discovered Alice Cooper? A good example of the form enhancing the material and not quite getting in the way of it.

I originally thought it was a Cat Stevens thread.

I'm happy to let him listen to anything he wants. Now, if I can just get him off of that goddamned Minecraft!

That's certainly the heaviest one. And it was, somehow, co-written by Bryan Adams!

If you are from Michigan (as I am) your son most certainly has the correct answer.

And you're wearing it while you listen.

Actually you could have just stopped where I placed the asterisk.
