A Journey Into Tokyo's Prog-Rock and Krautrock Museum

    Hey All,

I thought some of you would get a kick out of this. I was at Tokyo's prog-rock museum yesterday and took a ton of photos. :-)

You will enjoy this. :-) It's over on the Innerviews Facebook page, but is a public link.

While you're at it, check out this Tower Records photo set, if you dare. A store with 300 Crimson CDs, you say? Yes.

The museum and Tower: amazing, just amazing. To think how much money I could spend there.

Looking forward to my day in court.

That was awesome, I really enjoyed it.

And what's with the medium-sized t-shirts?! What prog fan wears a medium?

I guess my next trip will be to Tokyo...

I have been to Yokohama stores before and just about every one of them had Prog Section though most of the CDs were rather expensive...

Btw the museum is just amazing if not outright bizzare...

Amazing and bizarre, which I think is perfectly fitting!

It's the standard Japanese men's size, really.

There were almost no non-Japanese people in there, actually.

I think this is a very underground thing, despite being located in the very public Tokyo Tower.

I just got a note from Manuel Göttsching about this album. Even he hadn't seen the full depth and breadth of this!

I have been there and had a blast, did you also go to Disk Union?
They have a whole prog-rock store, when I was there they had MAGMA wallpaper and were giving away promo-items with the Vertigo swirl.

Brings back many memories of the time I lived in Tokyo in 86-87. I worked at a crepe restaurant in Shibuya and often visit Tower Records. Jeff Beck Wired was the first CD I bought.

I must go to these stores before I die. My son is moving to Burma soon, so maybe someday when we go visit him, I'll stop along the way and lose my shirt at these stores.

Yes, that is the subject of a whole different album coming soon, with half of it on the prog-rock store only. :-)

A few people have asked "why are you posting record store albums?" The answer: because this is going to be over soon. So, in a way, I feel like I am in my own way chronicling history and the end of an era here. Something to look back on when I'm an old man.

Utterly mad and wonderful. I was a little disappointed that there is no wax Jaki Liebezeit to groove with wax Mani Neumeier.

Especially, stores with a prog section!

I remember when I lived in Mexico City for a while in 2000-2001, they had a Tower records with a big prog section. It was like heaven to me as I had never seen such a thing as a prog section in any store here in the U.S. or in my native Puerto Rico. I spent a lot of money there. I also lived in Germany in the early 90's and never saw a store with a specialized prog section although, of course, you could get prog records. I don't know if that Tower records store still exists in Mexico's Federal District, but Anil's photos sure brought back memories.

I have met *several* prog fans in Tokyo who had no idea this existed. Isn't that bizarre? It is totally underground as an experience. I have a feeling that record store will have a lot of new business in the coming weeks. :-)
