    Tortoise

I'm late learning about this band. Thank you to Joff Winks of Sanguine Hum who brought some to play on the Epileptic Gibbon Podcast Show! I've seen them mentioned in a couple of threads but thought they deserved their own. Love this set:

Welcome aboard! Glad you've discovered Tortoise. Now you need to buy everything they've done. I love them. The leaders of the Post-Rock movement.

Yeah, Tortoise is one of the best.

One of my favourite bands. Tor-Troise...ha, just noticed that. This is one of the best 'prog' epics of the '90s IMO...

    A great performance:

My fav album is Standards although they're all very good.

I too like them all, but Standards and TNT are my favorites.

Yes, I can see this discovery is going to cost me.

Sounds great indeed. I'll move that CD to the top of my list.

I was a follower from day #1 but jumped off their train at Standards. They owe a huge debt to progressive rock.

Anyone else here who was at their Electric Ballroom (Camden Town) gig in the mid-90s? They were on the same night as Creaming Jesus.

If you're gonna get one Tortoise cd, i'd recommend TNT.

I prefer their first 2, particularly Millions Now Living Will Never Die, which I think is their best, my interest starts to fade with TNT.

Millions Now Living Will Never Die was one of the truly substantial "independent" US rock releases from the mid-90s, and it still sounds absolutely refreshing even today. Their latest CD was their best since TNT, I think.

People into the trickier part of Tortoise's "most rocky" aspects owe it to themselves to check out Algernon, an excellent US band somewhat picking up there and developing it way further.

I'm also a big fan - they hit that sweet spot between rock and minimalism for me. I prefer TNT but am slowly buying all their releases.

Jeff Parker is one of my favorite guitar players on the scene today.

Algernon are on my never-ending 'music I have to check out' list. Thanks for reminding me I have to check them out.
