My review of Edward Simon's Live in New York at Jazz Standard, today at All About Jazz.

The Venezuelan-born, Florida-resident pianist's first album features the same trio as on his two previous Cam Jazz recordings, 2006's Unicity and 2009's Poesia, culling three of its five extended tracks from these recordings, one Antonio Carlos Jobim standard and a piece from his 2001 collaboration with saxophonist David Binney, Afinidad (RED Records).

With his seven year-old trio of bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade, the chemistry quotient is high, even as Simon's own playing reflects an ever-compelling mix of head and heart. He may be busy these days with the Ninety Miles touring band and SFJAZZ Collective, and his own discography may be growing slowly, methodically and, ultimately, inevitably, but that just makes a new album from Simon a reason to celebrate.
