The Load "Praise The Load" features a prog take on The William Tell Overture.
This is on a studio album too.
I'm not in a place where I can research it right now, but hopefully this will jog someones' memory:
One of the 'guitar heroes' did a half-decent take on Rossini's William Tell Overture long ago. I think it was Yngvie Malmsteen (sp?)...

Sure, many people "did" William Tell. But I don't hear that "Morning" section anywhere in there.... It's always the Finale. Like this:
And PFM probably did (and does?) it during every concert..
HuGo"Very, very nice," said a man in the crowd,
When the golden voice appeared.
She was gold alright, but then so is rust.
"Such a shame about the beard."
I got the Esoteric reissue of Chocolate Kings and there's a version of the William Tell Overture on the bonus live disc.
Mike Oldfield also did a version.
I'm not sure most people are even aware there's more to the piece than just the Finale. I think people assume the excerpt that we associate with the Masked Man (Oh shit, do not get me started on the Lenny Bruce routine, otherwise I'll be here for the next 20 minutes reciting the entire thing...and you better believe I can do it, too!), and unless they track down a proper recording of the entire piece, don't find out otherwise.
Plenty of live versions available by Glen Campbell.
Digital William Tell.
GG hit the nail on the head, most people think the finale IS the whole thing. Beethoven's 9th suffers from a similar problem, many people think the "Ode to Joy" chorale section is all there is.
