Best Albums of 2013 (part one)

OK, so we're somewhere in the middle of the second quarter of the year to start this thread. What have you heard so far this year that has tickled your fancy?

I'm sure Steve Wilson's The Raven That Refused to Sing and Big Big Train English Electric Part II are going to be on many a list, but what else is worth checking out?

I have some (likely essential) 2013 albums to catch up on myself, but here's some albums to consider prog and otherwise...

Grand General - s/t: A ripping jazz-fusion album from members of various groups on the Rune Grammofon label.

Henry Fool - Men Singing: Not what I anticipated. It's on the Kscope label, and features Tim Bowness of No-man. All instrumental.

Herd of Instinct - Conjure: Crimson vibe. Solid music, released on Djam Karet's Firepool label.

La Maschera di Cera - Le Porte de Domani: Lastest from these guys. Pretty solid stuff. Supposed to be a sequel of Felona e Sorona, but was hoping for a bit more. They made an English version as well.

Spock's Beard - Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep: Surprisingly solid album from the Enchant-fronted Beard. It has a real Kansas AOR vibe throughout mixed with two songs obviously co-written by Neal Morse.

Lifesigns - s/t: Not really my thing, but what I heard sounded like it would appeal to many here.

Tomasz Stanko - Wislawa: Latest from this Polish jazz icon. If you dig his stuff, get it.

Thieves' Kitchen - One for Sorrow, Two for Joy: Fairly solid new record. They've never quite impressed me as they have some here, but I think fans will find a lot to like.
    WANTED: Sig-worthy quote.

Guapo - History Of Visitation - as good as 5 Suns and Black Oni to these ears, includes an excellent DVD of 5 Suns performed at NF.

Herd Of Instincts - Conjure - definite Crimsony vibe, I think this is becoming a new sub-genre.

Setna - Guérison - sophomore effort from the excellent Zeuhl band

Archestra - Arches - One of a duo of bands arisen from the ashes of Rational Diet

Five Storey Ensemble - Not That City - the other ex-Rational Diet band, more Chamber than Archestra, both great.

Steve Wilson - Raven That Refused to Sing - yes as everyone seems to say, it's really good.

Gordon Haskell - "You've got to keep the groove in your head and play a load of bollocks instead"
I blame Wynton, what was the question?

Scary stuff - I have most of the titles listed above except Grand General (whose description convinced me to get it right away as I am a huge fan of everything Rune Grammofon puts out), Spock's Beard (do not care much about them anymore even though I hear this is the best from them in a while) and Tomasz Stanko (did not know the chap so I will have to dig up some YouTune clips).

Here are other albums released this year so far that I find quite good:

Le Porte Non Aperte - Golem
Marbin - Last Chapter of Dreaming
    Motoi Sakuraba - What's Up?
    Phlox - Vali
    ptf - percept from …
    Taipuva Luotisuora - 8
    Taylor's Universe - Worn Out
    Oxhuitza - S/T
    Niacin - Krush

I'll include reissues released in 2013:

The $100 Guitar Project-65 guitarists recorded tracks on an old cheap Japanese electric guitar.Lotsa variety and quite a few memorable tunes.

Dennis Johnson-November-amazing solo piano piece by an almost forgotten proto-minimalist composer.

Keith Tippett Group-'You Are Here...I Am There'-Brit jazz 'par excellance'.

Jack O' The Clock-All My Friends-How to describe the music in a few words?....I can't.Check out the Bandcamp page for this release. There's one YouTube clip, also.

Paul Motian-ECM box-for me, a treasure trove of unheard music.

Peter Evans/John Hebert/Kassa Overall Trio-Zebulon-high octane free jazz from a trumpet player with almost otherworldly technique, backed by bass and drums who are more than equal to the task of keeping up and providing support and commentary to Evans brass playing.

I'm sure i'm forgetting other releases in 2013......

Oblivion Sun - The High Places
Thieves' Kitchen - One For Sorrow, Two For Joy
    Grand General - S/T

    Most anticipated by me: Advent

I really feel like I'm forgetting something important, but can't think what it might be.

Lifesigns? That's another Esoteric release I've been gobbling up. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the new Spock's Beard as well -- great, great songs. Still need to hear that BBT and SW stuff.

If you like Sanguine Hum Kerry , Im sure you will like the SW release. SW really likes the Sanguine Hum album too. None of you have heard our Hawkwind- Warrior on the Edge of Time reissue yet coz its not out for 3 weeks----I think that will blow your socks off! Steve Wilsons 5.1 surround mix sounds amazing to me.

    My favourites so far:

    The Archestra - Arches
Five Storey ensemble- Not that City
    Iva Bittova - Iva Bittova

and okay, I also like the Raven that refused to sing, but not as much as those three.

I was actually quite dissapointed with English electric pt 2. Not for me anymore.
