Ian is one of the better ones (ranks atop with Roger Waters, IMHO). Not just because of TAAB.

my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.
imaginative, descriptive, biographical and a little perverted..... a brilliant combination.
I think his lyrics in the '70s and '80s were pretty good; sometimes excellent. But they were frequently bad after that, so it's hard to know what to make of him. Some of lyrics to the songs on Catfish Rising, for example, were absolutely horrible, IMO.
At his best (most of the Minstrel in the Gallery album, for example, and pretty much all of Broadsword and the Beast) he rankws with Bruce Cockburn as the best lyricist in rock.
Shares Peter Hammill's intellect and respect for words, but with a musch stronger sense of their value as sounds (i.e. a stronger sense of poetry) and the virtue of brevity.
Does it matter that this waste of time is what makes a life for you?

And as to the subject matter on hand: like the Dos XX man I don't always sing out loud. But when I do, I do so to Jethro Tull...
And that's because he was one of the best writers on this planet and of his generation. Sharp, witty, a great storyteller but always seemed to fit with the music and vice versa. Certainly in their heyday, might have lost his touch in the late 90's and afterwards IMHO but too large a great catalog beforehand to impact on his legacy. He/they will always be among my favorites bands to listen to. The stuff from the 70's has never and will never get old to my ears. TAAB will always remain my all-time favorite song/album, bar none.
Peace,
Alex
To be honest, I haven't paid attention at all to post Storm Watch albums' lyrics... And even then, anything post TAAB (which I hold as the utmost best rock lyrics) hasn't really tickled my curiosity enough to analyse them.
I think indeed Hammill completes the podium in terms of serious rock lyrics
