I have to admit that I ignore most of the more Progmetal based bands from Italy, there are so many of them (easily twice as much as other Prog bands form Italy).

See Mogilevs Blog for an overview of Italian Prog Metal. https://newprogreleases.blogspot.com/

Some are very good (as the one you posted) as they are only partial Prog Metal. So if anyone has any recommendations in that
    direction please do so!

Alright, things are looking up from the Italian scene. Aspic Boulevard "Akragas" sounds very nice and now the one I have been waiting for; Submarine Silences' new one - "Did Swans Ever See God"! Yikes. Thanks for posting.

It's available on Spotify (for those who use it) and the opening 17 minute track is quite a bit more straightforward with tiny bits of noisy strangeness going on. Certainly not like whatever is going on in that reprise.

I'm listening to Jet Lag's Delusione Ottica for the first time in at least a decade now, and I have to say it's pretty damn fascinating how bands as obtusely and greatly "retro-authentic" both musically/referentially and in terms of achievement couldn't a) make more of a name for themselves and b) seemingly (and likely for that very reason!) disappear completely from the "scene". I mean, this is challenging not only in terms of musical but also historical criteria! Sure, there's an ill-advised tune with English lyrics early on, but after that one they keep pumping out some truly blasting stuff here, clearly indebted to 70s obscurities like Capitolo Sei and Jumbo but also very "present" in force.

And there were loads of these one-off groups, releasing their statement and then all but null. What do fine, young musicians like this do with their impressive abilities afterwards? To me they appear like up'n'coming track-and-fielders who simply succumb to discouragement on not "succeeding" - but what on earth were they thinking? All that talent, all that energy - and then so preciously little in ultimate return. And you could add dozens of names from Italy alone; Sacka, Lothlorien, Chiave di Volta, Odessa, Aviolinée Utopia, Luna Incostante and on and on...
"Improvisation is not an excuse for musical laziness" - Fred Frith
"[...] things that we never dreamed of doing in Crimson or in any band that I've been in," - Tony Levin speaking of SGM

Jet Lag's Delusione Ottica is an awesome Album and easily in my Top 10 of post 70s Italian Prog.

Although Odessa and Luna Incostante both managed a second Album you are sadly correct, the number of
short lived (in number of Releases) Artists from Italy is Legion (to many to list)

There seem to be many bands disbanding during the making of a second Album: Garamond, Egonon, Gran Turismo Veloce etc. etc.

But also many band reappear after many many years out of the blue...

It is true that here in Italy the "mortality" of bands, especially in a niche genre such as prog rock, is extremely high. I have lost count of how many extremely interesting bands I have seen born and die only here in Genova just in the past 10 years, and many of them haven't even made it to the finish line of releasing their first album. In my experience this mainly depends on the fact that the music here is 99% not a job, we all have other activities that allow us to make it to the end of the month, and even bands that manage to get a contract with a record company like we did with Black Widow fail even to recoup expenses, let alone live on this. Almost everything that is earned from selling CDs ends up in the hands of the label, and even they don't get rich on it.
Since we necessarily have to consider music as an "extra", it is easy that after a while the commitment related to creating music, to produce it (in most cases it is an expense that rests on the shoulders of the band, at least if you want to keep a fair standard of quality and artistic freedom and more importantly property rights) and distributing it can become excessive for people who still have all the responsibilities related to work and family to look after, and this without taking into account the whole chapter of artistic differences or conflicts that may arise in any group of people working together.
I don't know if in other parts of the world things work differently, I can only speak for the situation here in Italy, but in reality I don't think there is a big difference elsewhere. The truth is that we do music for passion, and as always there are many things that could get in the way of that.

Thank you Nemo for your insights. i can clearly understand the reasons you mentioned, still the number of bands from Italy poping up nad disapearing after one or two albums
seems to be much higher than elsewhere. it was so already in the 70s where the financial situation was better for bands (compared to now).

Maybe there are just more Prog bands from Italy than anywhere else , or the one offs make a bigger impression than those of other countries.

Nemo, in your view which prog bands can actually make a living from music in Italy (let's leave out reunion tours from the first wave bands like PFM etc)?

If you had to provide a top 10 list in terms of the (admittedly scarse) commercial impact of post-classic prog in Italy, what would that look like?

Anyone else please feel free to provide your estimates as well.

    Thanks!

I think you sort of answered your own question. Italy produces a HUGE number of bands, thus the number of one off bands will be higher, but their percentage of one off bands may not be that much larger than other countries. I'm not going to bother with that math, but that's my gut sense.

What Nemo describes is EXACTLY the situation in the US, and from my correspondence with bands from other counties, I think is largely true elsewhere. Playing Prog is more a labor of love (or stupidity, depending on your perspective). Virtually all of the bands have other incomes, either from non-Prog related music, or from a day job.

Well, Italy doesn't have as many opportunities for musicians to be active professionally in music, even in a different genre, and also continue a 'serious' band on the side as might be the case some other industrialized countries. I could easily see that as reason for a lot of quick entries and exits.

As for no post-classic Italian prog band being able to make a living from music per se, I'd be curious to know how these bands do and if anyone comes closer (I hope there will be no arguments about the prog-ness of the various groups):

    Kingcrow
    DGM
    Barock Project
    Maschera di Cera
    Accordo dei Contrari
    La Coscienza di Zeno
    RanestRane
    The Watch
    Ingranaggi della Valle

Maybe a group like Mariposa should be mentioned or some of the more progressive offerings from Elio e le Storie Tese
