I never heard of Royal Hunt - I'll check them out. That Hammett project is one of my favorite things I've heard this year, in any genre.

1. Lux AEterna came up on my Pandora shuffle last night... It was good - but where was the audible crunch of James' riffing during Kirk's solo? It "seems" to be there but buried...
2. I also dig Royal Hunt - Paradox, but never bought the other rekkid. Thanks for reminder Duncan

Back to my usual sub-genres of metal
I've been spinning some old Peccatum albums.
I love Ihriel's voice, but she can't hold a note - nails on a chalkboard! (YMMV)
Pity, 'cuz the bulk of the music on these albums is very good. I particularly like Strangling from Within - but need to "turn a blind ear" (is that a thing?) to a few of her vocals. Fortunately, the albums are mostly instrumental.
Regards,
Duncan
^^ oh man, haven't listened to Peccatum in years. Not even sure what I've got from them anymore!

I was talking to a fellow geezer in a record store the other day and he had an interesting notion. Since Metallica are so tone deaf in terms of production and getting remasters right, they should hire Steven Wilson. Now there's a copy of ...And Justice I would put on autobuy.

I wish Steven Wilson would come to my apartment and just be there with me. We wouldn't even have to hold hands.
Regarding that new Metallica track, I like it. It's nothing earth shattering. More of the same. Good heavy metal.
Fans of Vektor and Vhol should give this a spin:

I heard the most recent (2020) Testament album yesterday, Titans of Creation, and it sounded great! Those guys still have the thrash sound down pat. Maybe slightly more modern but overall it will appeal to fans of the old school sound.

I just found this list on Bandcamp. Anyone familiar with these acts?

^^ I don't think I've ever heard any of them. But there are so many bands now that fall under the black metal umbrella, it's impossible to keep up with them all. I've just been reading the Best Of 2022 thread over at the Encyclopedia Metallum forum and WOW. It's just one name after another I've never even heard of, and yet they are making people's top 10 lists. I suppose I simply don't have enough time to devote to metal to be familiar with those bands, in the same way that those fans would see my list of favourites and wonder who the hell these prog bands are that I'm referencing.

Yep, there are a gazillion black metal bands out there. I'm still making my way through the classics like Darkthrone, Burzum, Enslaved, Immortal, Gorgoroth, etc. That's a TON of music right there.
I've been digging Blood Incantation's 2nd album 'Hidden History of The Human Race' and the new ambient album called 'Timewave Zero'. The fact that those two albums are by the same band is miraculous and fascinating.
List threw me at first as it started with Aufhocker, he normally does dungeon synth stuff (not dissimilar to Burzum but without all the horrible history and hate). But yeah, that's proper black metal right there.
Thanks, will explore!
