Yes, no metal at all in that final piece, very somber and beautiful. Thy Serpent went on to do a few more albums, and I have them all, but that debut is by far the best IMO. It has that doomy atmosphere that works so well in this style of music. I find a lot of black metal a bit too dry and lacking melody for my tastes. I believe the singer/bandleader went on to form a record label in Finland.

I like the track above, although in fairness it didn't knock me over like The Silent Man did or I: The Weapon. BUT...given that they play live with dual drummers, synths and the rest I fully expect this track will be an incredible stomper onstage.

If you can see them, do...they're the real deal and it is thrilling to watch.

OH MY GOD Years in a Day...the physical release is actually three live shows on both CD and one on DVD. My only complaint is that because of when it came out, it only covers material up through the Vertikal/Vertikal II era. But it's phenomenal.

Also, while I'm gushing like a total dweeb...this never got a physical release to my knowledge but it's pro-shot and comes straight from the horse's mouth so to speak. And Mariner was a bit of a grower for me (after Vertikal blew my mind, any follow-up was in a tough spot), but once it clicked it's epic and Julie Christmas was a perfect match for the band both on the record and onstage.

Last night: Single malt drams (Talisker and Macallan), the magic vape pen with Gorilla Glue cartridge, lights off, candles lit, fireplace going, and Still Life and Ghost Reveries spun in full on CD on my hifi. Best night of the week by far!

Watched the whole thing today. This band is amazing. I really loved the heavy keyboard textures at times. Grooves and vibes are all over the place, but of course its a pretty dark environment, which we love! I think the vocals are powerful and probably the aspect of this band that could throw people. I'm sure the lyrics would have more impact if you're reading along, at least for me its usually that way in most metal. I should have watched this on my phone with headphones - I just streamed it to my normal TV (no good audio system there). Its great to really get to know this band - cheers Johnny Batts.

PS....in general I've been riding a metal binge for the past 5 - 6 weeks, all over the map, trying lots of new stuff, and going back to the classics too. Really super fun, it's so nice to leave the prog scene for a bit and enter a totally new musical universe full of incredible music. Opeth is a huge part still of course, but just part of this ride

Awesome, glad you enjoyed it! Definitely check out Mariner live (the other video I posted above), the addition of Julie Christmas is a really nice vocal counterpoint but without turning into your generic "beauty + the beast" stuff.

Excellent I kind of did the same thing, except with synthwave....and I haven't really come back yet

I've got tickets to see Wolves in the Throne Room next month, their last album (atmospheric black metal) was pretty good so I'm hoping for a strong show. As much as I enjoy their albums, their live sets are touch and go. Deafheaven ticket bought too, although they're more of a sure thing in my book. Looks like Cult of Luna is going to be back in 2023. Planning to go to the Maryland Death Fest in May. And if Ulver doesn't pull a dick move and drop out yet again, I might just catch up with Just Eric in Vegas for Psychofest next August
