Seeing her/them open for Gojira/Deftones later this summer. I can't lie, I'm actually pretty down for this party:

Wow....that was very original. I checked out some of her / their other stuff on youtube too. Apparently at one time she was straight up pop, but now does this metal hybrid type thing. It is not all that different from what Japanese bands like Babymetal do, but not really that either. Thanks for posting.

Postvorta is an Italian metal band in the cinematic doom subgenre (to put a label on their music). Their music might appeal to prog lovers. They just released Porrima, a 5 track 86 minute album. To my ears it’s one of the best albums released this year. Judge for yourself http://postvorta.org/album/porrima

^ I heard about ten seconds of it. The death growl, cookie monster vocals made me move on.

Wow...lots to unpack and I'm still just on the first tune. Thanks!

For those that care, for those that can hang...saw Cult of Luna this weekend. "Dawn to Fear" was already my favorite album of 2019, and the show...god the show. So much power. And while they might've fooled me, I did not catch them using backing tracks. Everything I heard sounded live, with tempos pushing/pulling with the energy of the band & the room, dual drummers and crazy levels of musicality (especially with tons of strobes happening all around them).

See them if you can. It's a hell of a night.
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

I saw Cult of Luna various times. Great band, superb riffs and a fantastic concert experience. Saw them also with Julie Christmas some years ago.

Postvorta released 4 albums in the past decade. All are very very good. They all have something special that might appeal to the more adventurous PE members.

I'll be seeing Hevy Devy in Baltimore. Anyone else going?

Empath was my best-of for 2019.

I never expected to listen to Cookie Monster vocals myself. I disliked it until the first Sleepytime Gorilla Museum album was released back in 2004. This album contains some harsh vocals in an avant- progressive music setting. That was the starting point for listening and appreciating more music with harsh vocals.
Next steps was getting into atmospheric sludge metal. With bands like Cult if Luna, Neurosis, Callisto, Isis, Dirge, Amenra, Postvorta, .... I’m very happy to have crossed the bridge to another challenging music genre.

I had s similar experience many years ago, but my "gateway drug" was Opeth's Blackwater Park.

I'm glad you were able to cross the divide, and wish more "progressive" music fans would be more open to it!

Steven Wilson told me many years ago the the most "progression" in music right now is coming out of the metal genres. He was right. And he was not referring to the same-old-same-old Ozzy / Priest / Dream Theater formats - he said those acts hadn't done anything new in the last 15 years - and hence, if they aren't "progressing", they aren't really "progressive".
    Regards,

    Duncan

I've heard Cannibal Corpse. Like the guitars, can't deal with the vocals.

I generally like the music in extreme/death metal but yeah, the vox are just not my thing.
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart

That one and "Leaving Your Body Map" by maudlin of the Well were the two that won me over. Now, it's the sort of thing where I hear some songs and I can't imagine them WITHOUT that vocal style. Contrasts are often best: I like earlier Opeth and pretty much all Cult of Luna because it isn't just growls, nor is it just clean singing. They use what the song requires.

I know it isn't going to be for everyone, and respect for that, and to those who did at least try.

Minor aside: I had tickets to go see Cult of Luna/Christmas in NY for their Mariner tour but had to bail at the last minute. I still kick myself for missing that show every single day.

I loved Maudlin Of The Well. But their new incarnation Kayo Dot doesn't do it for me.

Are there any of these progressive metal bands that are just instrumental? I know of Zebulon Pike and of course, a multitude of stoner bands, but I'd like to hear some more.

Yeah...the first Kayo Dot was amazing, and the tour supporting the 2nd album was also epic. But the dual motW releases ("Bath" + "Leaving Your Body Map") were something truly special IMHO.

Have you heard Temple? Great great instrumental stuff...kind of like Opeth circa "Ghost Reveries" or "Blackwater Park" but sans vocals:

    https://tempelofficial.bandcamp.com/...-of-the-temple

This is pushing things a bit in terms of metal but you want some amazing/cinematic djent with lots of flash (and a surprising dose of jazz-influenced chord work), there's Chimp Spanner:

    https://basickrecords.bandcamp.com/a...oads-lead-here

There are others, but these are the first two that spring to mind

Binge-ing on "Grunge rock." Never liked that label, but you have to call it something. It wasn't Glam or Thrash but it was heavy. Besides Soundgarden im hearing stuff like Mother Love Bone and Green River. Lots of great music that came out of that movement. To me it's just great hard rock with some Sabbathy, Zeppliny influences, and maybe a little GNR and Aero.

NP: Nirvana.....In Bloom. It's heavy but melodic. Kinda Kings X like.

I know a lot of people on this forum hate Nirvana, but I have always liked most of their stuff.

Heard In Utero. They sorta remind me of a down tuned, version of The Stooges. Very punky.
