Love it, but only proper boxing. I boxed myself in the early 80s. I really dislike Thai boxing. And I detest the barbarity of cage fighting/UF/MMA & any other names it goes under.
But I fear even boxing isn't the same now, most big fights on channels most people don't have & two dozen titles in every weight division. The big named fights were really something in the 70s and 80s when there was only the WBC, WBA and IBF, they were family events watching Ali, Fraser, Foreman, Norton, Bruno, Tyson and then everyone talking about the fight at school or work the day after. Happy days.
My semi-finals:
Rugby v Cricket
Football v Cycling
And the winning pair going to the final are:
Cricket v Football
I hate field hockey, sorry, it's a joke to me compared to ice hockey. That may be insulting I admit, but its my true reaction to it. Men don't even play it in the US, it's considered a girls sport here. Every high school has a girls field hockey team, they never seem to have a boys team. I've watched some of it in the olympics, but really I think its a bit goofy looking, the reason I don't like it. Plus it's too low scoring. Is there great skill involved in the sport? I'm sure there is, but I don't have to like it. Of course I prefer US sports, with a couple exceptions of course. Ice Hockey is obviously Canadian in origin, so I'm admitting to liking something foreign. And Bocce is Italian. Team Handball, not sure where that originated, but I find that really cool and wish the US played it more. Same goes with water polo, which is a European sport of course. But I'm still a BIG FOUR guy, meaning baseball, football, basketball and hockey, and in that order. I like other sports like boxing, track and field, skiing and sometimes tennis, but it's not my focus like the 4 major us team sports.
If I had to narrow it down to one sport, I couldn't. I find American football to be the most exciting, but they play so few games. Baseball has a slow pace and even a huge fan like myself can get bored by it. But when its a well played game, it keeps my attention like no other sport. I live and die with every pitch in a big game. And they play EVERY day, so it makes tough losses easier to swallow. As to finding a sport dull, every sport can be dull at times. Watch any blowout in basketball, its like watching paint dry during "garbage" time, except to root for a bench warmer to finally score.
And while baseball and football are my # 1 and #1A sports, right now I'm mostly focusing on my NY Knicks. I'm a long suffering fan who gave up on them during the dark years, and only came back when that asshole Isaiah Thomas was gone. I got caught up in the Linsanity craze last year, and almost swore I'd never watch them again when the team let him leave. But now, it might as well be the early 90's all over again, I'm so into this team. Carmelo has just been crazy good of late and the team has become seriously fun again.
I hear this complaint about soccer all the time from Murkins. So why don't more of you like Cricket? Here's a scorecard from a recent England vs New Zealand match
NZ 1st Inning - 443 All out (152.3 Overs)
Eng 1st Inning - 204 All out (89.2 Overs)
NZ 2nd Inning - 241/6 Dec (57.2 Overs)
Eng 2nd Inning - 315/9 (143.0 Overs)
Match drawn in 5 days.
How can you not love a sport with over 1000 runs in one match?

Jumping in late, but ...
Rugby v American Football -- If you're talking rugby union, then I pick that. If you're talking rugby league, then I pick American football. Since you probably meant union, I'll go with "rugby" as my answer. (So much for Americans picking American sports!)
Gaelic football v Australian Rules football -- I really enjoy watching both, but I think I'll go with Gaelic football. Aussie rules can get a little too chaotic for my liking at times.
Baseball v Cricket -- Not a big fan of either, but I'll go with baseball.
Hurling v Lacrosse -- Hurling.
Football (soccer) v Basketball -- Soccer.
Ice Hockey v Field hockey -- Ice hockey.
Cycling v Swimming -- Cycling.
Handball v Volleyball -- No strong feelings about either one. Volleyball.
Slalom v Short track skating -- Slalom.
Track & Field v Gymnastics -- Gymnastics.

Well it was a tough final, there wasn't much in it either way, but at the last minute thinking it was going to be a draw, cricket pulled the excitement of Twenty20, 40 over league and ODI out of the bag and won the match! At the end of the day I think both are beautiful to watch as regards both play and strategy BUT a football match will always be a 90 minute match. Whereas a cricket match can run from 2 hours (Twenty20) to 3 or 4 hours (40/50) to one day (ODI) to 2 days (Test match) not to mention if you have time to attend a Test Match series over 6 days.
My champion of sports: Cricket! (At school I played rugby, football, cricket, golf, athletics)
I don't like MMA either. I tried to like it because it was all the rage for a while, but I can barely stand more than a minute of it. I also can't stand the guy who runs that league either. You know, boxing, and martial arts type sports might seem brutal to a lot of people but there is an artform to fighting sports. I agree that when they're fought within the rules of good sportsmanship then it's very entertaining. But the whole idea of watching men cut their faces open and watch blood splatter everywhere really makes me sick. Sports should be fun.Love it, but only proper boxing. I boxed myself in the early 80s. I really dislike Thai boxing. And I detest the barbarity of cage fighting/UF/MMA & any other names it goes under.
