By the by - weren't most of you ridiculing the very concept of this event for the better part of a year?
The complaint I'd make was that Yes played their current usual concert set, in a situation where they were obviously playing for diehard fans. Lots of bands trot out less obvious songs at fan-convention type events.
Of course I am still totally jealous of everyone who was there.
On second look, it appears the pool in front of the deck stage was open. Wow what a difference and shame. On Monsters of Rock it was covered to allow for more standing room and quite frankly, the best position for viewing and sound. I knew the two cruises used the same ship, stages, lighting and sound crews as well as the unique bar band, Heavy Mellow, but I assumed it would have the same setup.
BarryLI is right about what's prepaid, including a fancier served dinner (if you want slightly better food and have about 90 minutes). The biggest advantages are several days of great music and no need to drive home at night. :-) The downside is its impossible to see every show, so choices have to be made. But many of the bands play a similar set at least twice and there's at least three choices of bands at any given time after mid-afternoon. So there's always something happening and if you don't like what you see, move on to the next band playing down the hall or on a different deck.
I'll ask the question that either no one wanted to ask or (more likely), I'm the only one who's interested.
Did anyone manage to smuggle weed aboard?

Really? You of all people should know that bands are going to try to please what they perceive as their target audience. Most of the fans on this cruise will be old enough to remember the bands from the old days and won't want to hear anything past 1977. Sad but true. It's a nostalgia thing for most people going here. Some hardcore prog fans sure but even those so called hardcore prog fans want to hear the older stuff that they perceive as the "most prog."
So, do we know if Nektar did anything from the forthcoming "Time Machine" album? If not, did they say anything about it?
If anyone can come up with accurate Nektar setlists it would be greatly appreciated...
"Henry Cow always wanted to push itself, so sometimes we would write music that we couldn't actually play – I found that very encouraging." - Lindsay Cooper, 1998
"I have nothing to do with Endless River. Phew! This is not rocket science people, get a grip." - Roger Waters, 2014
"I'm a collector. And I've always just seemed to collect personalities." - David Bowie, 1973
The main bands -- Yes, Hackett, UK, Palmer -- all did sets based on their current touring. There were only minor variations (Howe and Davison did "Leaves of Green", for example, which is not from the current set, but they did that on most of the previous tour).
More unusual pieces or collaborations didn't materialise. Before the cruise, people were speculating about, for example, Squire joining Hackett to do a Squackett piece. That always seemed overly optimistic to me -- when would they get time to rehearse it? -- but it still would have been nice had it happened!
It seems the bands treated this as more like another gig rather than as a "fan-convention type event", perhaps because it was organised by the cruise people rather than something they organised themselves.

Nektar also played all of Remember The Future (part 1&2) and Man In The Moon (just the song) in one of the lounges. This was at the same time as the Yes Storytellers event (which was in the main theater), so there were a lot of people who didn't see this. Nektar also did a Storytellers event, where they just answered questions. They did mention Time Machine, and that it was coming out in April, and also spoke a lot about the cover tunes album they did. The sudden monsoon that hit them during Cryin' In The Dark at the pool stage was pretty intense. They tried to play through it, but it just kept getting worse. IMO Nektar was the one band that got heavily screwed by the scheduling/weather. They were supposed to play late on the opening night of the cruise at the pool, but got rained/winded out. I am not sure why they didn't try to fit them into a slot in the main theater at some point.
So let me see if I got this right.... Nektar played all of Remember the Future, three quarters of the Tab in the Ocean album and "Man in the Moon" between the different stages.
No new pieces from Time Machine were heard?

Mick that is correct, as far as I know Nektar did not play anything else on the cruise other than what I stated. I arrived late for the Storytellers event, so I may have missed something, but Roye said they weren't planning on playing any new songs on the cruise.

Read my post that you quoted again. The question was asked with that disclaimer to prevent a post like yours. Three people on this thread have already responded that it was there, so I guess your guess is correct..
I guess if I went on a cruise like this I'd be happy with anything the bands I wanted to see played, as opposed to getting anal-retentive about set lists. The ability to enjoy the music in what is for me a very comfortable state of mind (as opposed to alcohol imo) trumps any "Damn, they didn't play *******" in my world. Your world may vary.

Plain and simple the Cruise was a blast. many moments you cannot explain unless you were there. Had a great time!! great music, great food, great service, great eye candy, only downside was Ocho Rios was a dump. Met Steve Hackett washing his hands next to me in the bathroom at Margarittaville in Cayman. Partied with his band, on the bus next to Alan White, in the casino with Carl Palmer's band... it was Prog heaven... already signed up for next year.
I know my buddies in Oblivion Sun are pushing to get on next year...I'm thinking..... Gabriel, PT, and Marillion for headliners... (strictly wishful speculation)...They are bringing a larger ship next year and I know in talking to management they would like to fill it with prog fans next time. Monsters of Rock cruise had 40 bands! They filled the ship. They threw one idiot off in Jamaica, but it never affected me. The boat rocked (literally) the weather was warm but crappy...didn't matter.
My wife and I had a great time! The weather was a little dismal, but no matter. The music was great and there was so much to do on the ship (we've never been on a big boat before). Spending shore time in Caymans and Jamaica was cool, too. Of course, one thing I'll always remember is the casual bumping into some of my prog heroes. Like the time I was at the buffet for breakfast gettin' my coffee and talking with Carl Palmer. Or sitting in a restaurant in downtown Ocho Rios and looking over to see Chris Squire at the next table (with his family, I presume). Or checking out some waterfalls and hey, there's Steve Hackett over there! Lots of moments like that and it was freakin' cool. I really enjoyed the meet 'n' greets, but it's hard not to sound like a gushing fanboy talkin' to these guys sometimes. The concerts were great and I loved the variety of indoor/outdoor/storyteller. Going to the Yes VIP event was also awesome, getting to meet the whole band and get my photo with all of them. I spoke with Jon Davidson a few times and he's won me over as the new Yes singer...this guy just lives this stuff! Finally, let me make a special shout-out to Glass Hammer and Zebra, while not necessarily headliners, were a personal favorite of mine on this trip. Just a FANTASTIC trip all around!
P.S. Running on a treadmill 15 stories up on a moving ship is a very unique experience... ;-)

Did Nektar always have this ability to avoid any buzz for a new or upcoming release?
I read a comment by a current band member who, when asked why other songs than the ones that frequently are played never make it on a set list, responded by saying that he knew what the audience wanted to hear. As a fan I can say that I would be jazzed to hear anything played by Nektar. But to hear something new? Well, that would take it into the stratosphere. Maybe that's why an average of 50-75 people attended each of the concert venues during the last US tour.
I thought the same thing. I'd think there'd be security and cops everywhere. Honestly, I'd be one of those toking a little but then with families and kids around not sure how I feel about lighting up.Did anyone manage to smuggle weed aboard?
