Actually I would say the best multi-camera filming of ELP was made at their farewell show at High Voltage Festival 2010

For Carl having played at Cal Jam '74 and Montreal olympic stadium, this sure is a helluva downgrade.

I'd rather just see a drum clinic with Carl. Pass.

It was chosen because they were able to obtain the raw un-edited multi camera footage and audio. I tell you, the audio remaster sounds phenomenal coming out of the live PA.

While maybe the RAH isn't the best representation of ELP... Personally, I would NOT want to see the High Voltage footage be used. It's not something I want to watch again.

I agree with you. I guess I'm just expressing my own lack of interest. It is admirable that he's doing something different with the music.

Carl has always stood his ground as to not wanting to replace Keith or Greg. So, presenting the music in a different format seems logical to Carl. Today, the idea to perform alongside the late Keith & Greg on recorded video, makes sense to Carl. It's an addition to his Carl Palmer Show that pays greater respect to Emerson & Lake. It's a win-win. The show is successful, and his venues have been getting considerably larger.

Prior to the video screen show, it had been suggested to Carl by his team to add more musicians to his show. He did do a few shows in Europe with a vocalist. And he also did a tour with Arthur Brown on vocals (for a few songs). But he always stops short of putting a whole new band together.

One thought I have always held - don't equate this to something I know as fact... is that because Carl didn't write the music of ELP, he would feel uncomfortable (or not up to) leading upscale musicians in proper performance of the music. He might need a musical director. A keyboard player and singer would also take the attention away from his spotlight. So Carl lets a guitarist & bass player make their own interpretation of the music, which he has done for 20 years and is doing just fine.
Thank you for your very informative input.
Carl may have many valid reasons (which I all respect) not to include a keyboard player in his live shows. But maybe he should try to go over this mental block and just try once.
There are many extremely talented keboard players available technically able and willing to take on this role without betraying the original ELP spirit , and most are K.E fans too. Maybe C.P has never heard about Rachel Flowers ? (but there are others too). I don't think it would be a sacrilege but maybe C.P think otherwise...
Of course, it won't be the "real" ELP, but the current version isn't either.
I've seen the CPB twice, great and very enjoyable shows but it was NOT E.L.P (and to be fair not advertised as such).
It was good but also very frustrating: no guitarist, as gifted as he could be, can ever replace K.E's multi-layered multi-parts huge keyboards and many musical sections and counterparts were missing, to be reconstructed mentally by the listener. Not what I would call the best option.
And as far as the current "ELP" (intentional quotation marks !) holographic tour is concerned, the title itself is misleading and I don't adhere to the principle.
    Not for me, sorry.

I just watched a few YT clips of Carl playing along with the video screens. I would characterize it as highly competent drum karaoke.

You could imagine something like this being the final exam for an advanced drumming class.

No argument whatsoever. I think I was just kind of acknowledging that while folks might prefer footage of E/L in their prime, I doubt much exists from that era that would be usable. The RAH was a full fledged concert film. It makes sense, even if it's not prime-era ELP.

This did not sound appealing to me at all. I want live music, not people playing with pre-recorded music and video. Plus it seemed a little creepy and a bit of a money grab. I passed on a local show.

But then the show opened for a show by Jon and the Band Geeks that I attended... and I found myself enjoying it despite those concerns. I doubt that I'd go again, but I did enjoy what I saw. I love what Carl has done with his band all on its own - honoring the music of ELP but in a totally different context.

Agree with this completely. Saw Carl Palmer's ELP Legacy on the first CTTE 2013 and a couple times since, they are incredibly impressive and very true and respectful to the originals. The players are incredible, including Carl.

I saw them twice too (see my previous post above) and there's no doubt the musicians were great and C.P still at the top, but still a "little something" was missing...
The question is: would you go to see a Jimi Hendrix tribute concert where there would be no guitarist in the band but a keyboardist playing all Jimi's parts ?
And if you think it can't be done, here is it (on a Clavinet !):

    ^^^ WATCH IT ! INCREDIBLE ! ! ^^^

There are several tours of wonderful music currently available to go to. These include The Martin Barre Band featuring old Tull, The David Cross Band featuring LTIA, Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets featuring early Floyd and BEAT featuring Adrian Belew (and Tony Levin) performing '80's Crimson music.

In all cases, the music is played with incredible passion and accuracy...ALL with 100% LIVE, breathing musicians onstage. And the surviving artists are having the time of their lives performing their old music.

I won't deny Carl's wanting to make a living...but there is NO comparison here. Carl playing to old ELP video footage is appalling to me...not very original and just a money-grab.

I'll answer that about seeing a Hendrix Tribute concert without guitar question with an emphatic NO. On a side note, I saw Carl Palmer in concert back in 2016 [just after Keith Emerson's death but before Greg Lake's]. While Carl's drumming was top notch, I didn't care for hearing ELP's songs without a keyboard and without vocals.

That's what I see myself thinking, so I haven't even checked CP's band versions of ELP stuff. Unfair? Maybe - I don't disagree; every artist is entitled to present their craft in whatever way they want and it is only fair to give them a chance. That said, I am entitled to opinions and taste. CP will survive.. I hope.

It is unfortunate that ELP tied their identities... to the brand! So no Foreigner (no original members at all) situation here... not possible I guess. Although, obviously once you build an identity, maybe it doesn't matter. I believe we all accept ELPowell as basically ELP.

For my part and personal opinion, yes, I would be more open to CP putting together a band with a keyboard player, bass player and singer (don't have to be same person!) and present ELP's music. Just don't call it "CP's ELP experience" !

He could even call it "ELP" and say... "it's NOT an acronym!, the band is called literally ELP! Emerson, Lake and Palmer is a different band!"

Being silly of course, but I do feel it would be a better presentation of the music to do that... Maybe Tom Brislin or even Jordan Rudess might be up for it!

That is no joke in the case of BEAT. Adrian had an ear to ear smile on his face all night last week in Chicago. Anyway... back to CP...

I don't necessarily agree with this considering both Keith Emerson's and Greg Lake's families both approved. And as far as "extreme accuracy," 2 people I know saw Beat and said Vai did not play Fripp's parts note for note. I saw the David Cross Band and many of Fripp's parts were done by the keyboardist. I think they all could be considered "Money grabs" using that argument.

So if there is an audience for it- go for it.
I saw the original ELP a number of times and Carl Palmer's ELP legacy and enjoyed both very much and each were very different which was great. Would I personally go see this tour with ELP film?...no - but I cant fault anyone for wanting to see it.

Is is unethical to release dozen's of albums from Zappa since he has passed? Is it unethical for bands with NO original members to keep playing the original band's repertoire? This has been going on forever.

I have a DVD of the Carl Palmer Band. I got it in a trade. It's the GBD trio. It's pretty good. Still, I think if he's gonna do an ELP tribute, c'mon get a keyboard player. Why not someone like Derek Shirinian or Wakeman?

Agreed....except for Carl. I just wanted to see everyone's thoughts on this tour. I saw his band on tour with Yes, Arthur Brown & John Lodge in 2019 and thought he was quite good.

Well said, and I woud like to add a few more bands that feature original members (that are not tribute bands): Best of both Worlds Sammy Hagar band plays old Van Halen, Zappa plays Zappa, the current Asia (with only Geoff Downes), Steve Hackett Genesis Revisited and why not: Yes with survivor Steve Howe.

And one of the other "hologram" shows I can think of is the one for Ronnie James Dio with some of his original band members playing. All these are very good but are simply not the original. IMHO Carl's band/tour doesn't add much to powerful singularity that ELP was.
