Jethro Tull - Fresh Snow At Christmas 2024 Redux

Jerjo posted about this in the Tull Binge thread but I thought it deserved it's own thread:

Jethro Tull’s 2003 Christmas album has been remixed and expanded for a reissue in early December. The Jethro Tull Christmas Album, now has the subtitle ‘Fresh Snow At Christmas’ and will be available as a 4CD+blu-ray deluxe set or on double vinyl.

The album includes new interpretations of seven Tull songs, including 1968’s ‘A Christmas Song’ (the B-side of the single, ‘Love Story’). This festive offering was also the last studio set to feature longtime guitarist Martin Barre, who composed the closing instrumental ‘A Winter Snowscape’.

“Some of the tracks are not necessarily Christmas songs; they’re more seasonal so that gives a broader window,” says Ian Anderson. “And then there are a couple of them that I quite often play in the middle of summer and say, ‘It’ll soon be Christmas – it’s in the diary. So let’s kick it off now.’ And that’s part of what I’ve done over the years since October of 1968 when I went into record ‘A Christmas Song’. So, yes – it goes back a long way.”

Bruce Soord (of The Pineapple Thief) has remixed the album in stereo, 5.1 and Dolby Atmos and this deluxe set also offers Christmas Live At St. Bride’s 2008 (also newly mixed by Soord) and the previously unreleased The Ian Anderson Band Live At St. Bride’s 2006.

The blu-ray obviously features the Atmos and 5. 1 mixes of the studio album but also contains hi-res stereo mixes of the album and both live recordings.

The 2LP set features the new stereo remix of The Jethro Tull Christmas Album and marks the debut of this album on vinyl. There’s a special clear vinyl edition called ‘Pearlescent Sunrise’ available via some retailers.

The Jethro Tull Christmas Album: Fresh Snow At Christmas will be released on 6 December 2024 via InsideOut Music.

Ok....This looks like it will be presented in the familiar "book format" and should fit nicely into Your Row of Tull Books! And I'll say it here now "gee, I wish I would have bought this when it first came out...and now it's OOP!

I pre-ordered with Ken @ LE.....shipping for both the CD's & LP's was only $5.00....you cant beat that.....Amazon is $20.00 higher with my states sales tax. Soon we'll be...." I Believe In Fondling At Midnight, when the dogs have all been fed."

^ You just nudged me into preordering from LE also! I almost ordered from another vendor where it's a few dollars less, but decided to entrust it to Ken instead so I know it'll be shipped out quickly once it's out.

If you just want the stereo remixes, Bandcamp has it available for preorder in 24/44.1 resolution. It might show up elsewhere.

I do love this album as it is essential listening for me come december. I never got the live album, so this will be a good chance to rectify that.
Please don't ask questions, just use google.

I do enjoy the live album....that's why I'm looking forward to the additional live one in this package. I'm hoping for some new information in the book too.

I think I listened to it once on youtube and it seemed like the perfect compliment but then when I couldn't find it on CD I guess I just forgot about it.

But absolutely. More christmasy tull (or related) is always welcomed.

Have all the book sets but this for me is a pass, I'll listen to the re-mixes on Qobuz and that will be all right by me.

I forgot to post this at the time, but I reviewed this set:

While not “Tull” related….one tradition I enjoyed was listening To NPR broadcasting Christmas morning at Kings College. The 9 hour time zone change made the broadcast early Christmas Eve here on the West Coast USA.

Another Christmas Eve memory…..1982. Just graduated college 2 days earlier….walked to Christ Church in Philadelphia where me and my GF were living. Her classmates were in a brass quintet playing carols. No electric lighting…..only candle light. Looking down at Benjamin Franklins box and listening to brass & woodwind quintets all evening…. Then the 1/2 hour walk home through snow. What a perfect evening.

I picked the CD set up in my local HMV.
The remixed version by Soord sounds quite different, especially when there are vocals.

It sounds livelier to my ears, and the drums are more prominent and the vocals in some songs sound different, a bit like 'live' vocals. It has a bit more of a 'frantic' feel n the instrumentals if you see what I mean.

Slightly OT here but as us US fans are left “stuck in the August rain” on the Xmas box, I started thinking about what the ‘next’ Tull book set might be. 2025 is the 30th anniversary of both Roots to Branches and Divinities and it seems the perfect time to commemorate them in a huge book set ! I can dream, can’t I ?
